When you say "marginalised by the powers that be", has it ever been celebrated like that? I'm 34 and I know a few people who are maybe Tommeh Robinson types adjacent who usually dress up and go for a drink to celebrate, but i've never known anyone else be bothered. I've never had the sense there was anything to marginalise.

It will never be as big as St Patrick's Day, simply because there is no single beer, and therefore company so associated with it and therefore willing to splurge millions n marketing and bunting, hats, and whatever other tat to promo it.

To be fair I usually put up a St Georges flag picture up on Facebook because I live in Scotland and it usually gets a bit of banter from Scottish pals and a bit of whinging pro and against in a Gammon/Loony Lefty style.
Couldn't give much of a toss about it in the same way that nobody up here seems to care about St Andrews day. The only one that seems to have any traction is St Patrick's but that as someone says above is because Guinness have gone all out over the last twenty years or so to use it as a cracking bit of promotion. Good on em.

Over here in Benalmadena nearly all the English bars put the bunting out to celebrate St. George’s day. Even the Spanish celebrate it... up in Mesquita Square in the Spanish area they put flags out etc and have music to celebrate. They obviously do the same for St. Patrick’s day etc.

Strange isn't it, people just want to celebrate the fact it's the day of England's national saint and the miserable I'll be offended on behalf of everybody brigade immediately cast aspersions that if you quite like being English you're a Tommy Robinson worshipper.
I'm from immigrant stock and was brought up to be grateful to live in democratic England. It might surprise the misery guts out there that this also applies to Asian,African,Arabic etc English men and women.

Never understood why there's always two in May, (sometimes you get 4 in 5 weeks if Easter is late) and then nothing else til the end of August!

Ideally switch the late May one to early June and put two new one in early July and then in October so the long wait between August and Christmas is shorter.

Yeah they rollover here in Ireland. My colleague is in Portugal and theirs don't roll over either.

In Tarragona today where they are celebrating St Jordi dia with the main calle full of stalls selling red roses, dragons and second hand books, mainly but not exclusively, for charities.
And the symbol of St Jordi is a red cross on a white background.
I’ve never got the fuss over St George as he had no connection with England. As Shakespeare was born and died on 23-4 I’d far rather it was Shakespeare day.

There's something on in Trafalgar Square each year (normally at the weekend rather than on the day) but until Carling put their full marketing budget behind it I imagine it will take a while to catch St Patrick's Day.

I happened to be in New York a couple of times on St Patrick's Day. The city really does turn green (admittedly mainly with green vomit) for the day.

In Catalunya, where I arrived, yesterday, the Calalunyan flag was flying, everywhere. It is San Jordi's Day here too.

Like Zizkov, Germany lose them too if they fall on a weekend. It also varies by state. I'm in Hessen, and we get 10. Bayern get 13!
