Re: Born This Day, 1926: Eric Morecambe
The 'Andre Previn' sketch is my favourite.
Apparently Eric was a bit concerned as to how it would go as Andre Previn only learnt his lines in a cab on the way to the TV studios but you can see Eric relax as he knew he'd nailed it after he delivered the line about fetching his baton from Chicago.

Hard to believe he was only 58 when he died, 40 years ago at the end of this month.

I'm told the Chicago line was an ad lib.Vintage Claret wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 2:01 pmThe 'Andre Previn' sketch is my favourite.

Yeah, 28th May 1984- my wife and I had got married a couple of days before and were driving up to the Lake District for our honeymoon when the news of Eric's death came on the radio.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 2:20 pmHard to believe he was only 58 when he died, 40 years ago at the end of this month.
Think it was the only time I've been genuinely moved to tears by the death of a famous person I'd never even met

An extremely funny man. Still find myself laughing out loud at his antics alongside Ernie Wise. An absolute comic genius, alongside the likes of Ronnie Barker.

Christmas still would not be Christmas without Eric and Ernie in my living room. Loved Les Dawson and Teo Ronnies but Eric was and remains number one go to, forty years later (wow). He’d have loved to see Luton’s rise.

On the bus on Saturday when a police car raced past us at speed. Guy behind me - “He won’t sell many ice creams going at that speed”. Every time it makes me smile. Even 431st time.

No it was definitely Eric Morecambe, I remember because he was talking to a bloke with little hairy legs and a toupee.Claret Till I Die wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 7:56 pmThat may well have been me or my mate who said it then...

The funniest sketch for me was their take on South Pacific, singing, "There ain't nothin' like a dame" with Eddie Waring et al doing acrobatics.

Shirley Bassey for me, she had such a reputation for being a deva that they could not believe it when she joined in, and it showed.

Another one of many classics from that brilliant show. I liked the Glenda one too.

Re: Born This Day, 1926: Eric Morecambe
Great memories of growing up watching them ,especially the Christmas shows ...
They were interviewed together on Parkinson, in the mid 70's, where they talked about their early days as teenagers, appearing towards the end of the war, at the Windmill Theatre in London, famous for it's nearly nude showgirls ... Eric recalled " Oh yes, there were some beautiful girls there backstage, they'd walk around virtually naked. There was this stunning brunette, who strolled around wearing just black stilettoes and black gloves ... we called her the " 5 of Spades " !!

Re: Born This Day, 1926: Eric Morecambe
That sketch is one of their very best. But I do prefer the work of Ronnies Barker and Corbett. Barker was a genius at word play, examples are Mastermind, the 2 of them on payphones to their partners but could well be answering each other, hieroglyphics, the one letter sketch - FUNEM (have you any ham) and for me the best sketch of all time, the Four Candles sketch. Eric Morecambe always seemed an old bloke to me, yet he was only 3 years older than I am now when he died.THEWELLERNUT70 wrote: ↑Wed May 15, 2024 11:01 amMy absolute favourites Morecambe and Wise, I still ham it up with the old glasses jiggle on the odd occasion my comedy timing is spot on

Re: Born This Day, 1926: Eric Morecambe
Back in 1974 we had seats just behind the directors box at Luton and just before the game started he came in to take his seat. This was Eric Morecambe the football fan though so I didn't laugh at his very presence. That was until he turned towards us and shifted his glasses in the only way that he can. That's all he needed to do, I was in pain laughing.

Eric Morecambe was a genuinely funny man.
There have been so few.
Tommy Cooper too.
Others not so natural.
