Winning over the fans

The thread on Trafford got me thinking about players who fans didn't initially rare, but proved them wrong. This isn't about how well JT may or may not do in the future, thinking of players who have proven fans wrong in the past.

Recent ones that spring to mind are Dean Marney and Sam "The White Iwelumo" Vokes.

Or are some people too stubborn to admit they may have been wrong (thinking of someone like David Jones who continued to get stick from regardless of how well he did).

Charlie Austin. He looked horrific initially.
Danny Ings - Looked like a Kompany player, all flicks and tricks but soft and no end product. Turned into the best player I've seen wear the shirt.
Trippier - I thought he couldn't defend.
Matthew Taylor - he surprised me with how much ability on the ball he had, shame we only got him at the latter end of his career

Barton - I thought he would be more trouble than he was worth, but on the pitch he was brilliant for us.

Ben Mee - looked poor at the start playing at LB, but he turned out to be not half bad

David Jones - By the end of his time here he had won over most of the empty heads who can't get their head round so people being left footed.

Robbie Blake, he was useless in his first half a season, but he needed a hernia op.

We saw the true Robbie at the start of 02/03. It's just a shame the rest of the team was crap by then.

Kurt Nogan won me over after a slow start, had a great 95/96 and then ****** it all away the following season under Heath and became a figure of hate.

Gradually, as the season has wore on, I would put Dara O'Shea in here. He was really, really bad I felt in the first sort of 3 months of this season, but he has become one of the best performers overall in my opinion. I expect him to be excellent for us in The Championship.

Not once did I take the opinion Marney or Vokes were bad signings, although I remember Marney getting stick on here… I always thought it was by people who did not understand you cannot just have ‘flash’ without ‘bang’ in midfield.

A large number of fans used to think a free transfer meant the player was useless and didn't relate it to a player being out of contract.
There are still a significant number who still haven't got their heads round it.

It feels like heresy, but I was mightily unimpressed with Martin Dobson when he 1st came into the team.

He played at centre forward and I thought he was a right donkey!!

He wasn't half decent in mid-field though and also played well at centre-half.

When we had him on loan, Sam Vokes was filed under Josh McQuoid, Dean Bowditch and Scott Noble.

Then it was announced we later signed him permanently, I was underwhelmed, to say the least; he was not even a decent squad player!

I was 100% against the Barton signing - thought he’d be an absolute pain and be a serious distraction. Ended up getting us promoted.

By the way, though I respect the premise of the thread, I don't think James Trafford needs to prove anything. Burnley fans recognise the lad as a talent; it's just that he has been mismanaged. He wasn't ready to be the number one goalkeeper for the club, given his age and experience.

Tommy Hutchinson. One of John Bond's many City signings and as such not popular. However, he stuck around and won over the crowd.
