Facial Recognition System at Turf
Facial Recognition System at Turf
Has anybody heard anything about this? Mentioned by the club at the recent FAB meeting apparently.

I would imagine its used in a lot of places these days ... the following off tinterwebby thingummybob.
"Retailers such as Home Bargains, Co-op supermarkets, Flannels and Sports Direct have been using live facial recognition technology software supplied by company Facewatch, to identify shoplifters in their stores across the UK"

Re: Facial Recognition System at Turf
I was told about this about 6 weeks ago along with CCTV being able to zoom in on every seat.
I don't think they were under the impression it was being used though.
It won't be cheap having the specialist operatives.

Re: Facial Recognition System at Turf
We’ve started using facial recognition.
In essence, we upload all images of people that are wanted into the database. I think in the Met it’s something like 14 thousand images.
The cameras will take a picture of your face, and obviously if you match, officers will come and engage.
The error rate is something obscenely low- from memory about 1 in 40,000.
If you are not wanted and your face doesn’t match any image in the database, then your picture is deleted straight away.
Of course I’m biased, but I think it’s excellent. If you’re not wanted by the Police, then you really have nothing to worry about.

Yes because matchday at Turf Moor has always been a haven for fugitives and villains.TsarBomba wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 8:34 pmWe’ve started using facial recognition.

I can understand it high risk areas like airports or even shops where there is a risk of theft, but why have them at a football ground?
Re: Facial Recognition System at Turf
Perhaps for people with banning orders from attending football matches

Those pesky civil liberties hey. You won't know anything about civil liberties until they've been completely removed, which is where we are heading in general, not just at the Turf.Stonehouse wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 8:37 pmCouldn’t agree with you more but the Civil Liberties Brigade will be along any minute now.

Re: Facial Recognition System at Turf
Maybe it’s to change the way we gain entry?
Currently, we have a coded ST card that has to be handed over and scanned by another person who then activates a lever that frees up the turnstile. Thats after being held in a queue to be frisked by someone who has received no training, and who doesn’t really want to be there anyway….
Anything that improves the way we get into the ground has to be welcomed if you ask me.
I can’t really think of anything “sinister” as to why they would use this - maybe those of you who are against it (or are worried by its use) could help me out by explaining what exactly it is that’s not sitting well?

Like I say, I’m in favour of it, but it needs to be heavily regulated.

As someone who is into strict policing and law and order I actually don’t like this at all.
Re: Facial Recognition System at Turf
You don't need/aren't required, to hand your card to the turnstile operator. Just scan it yourself. Maybe nothing sinister but why? How will they get every person's photo, especially casual attendees?bobinho wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 8:58 pmMaybe it’s to change the way we gain entry?

Lots of negativity around facial recognition systems but why if you have done nothing wrong & it helps with safety? No one on here has said they are going to stop going on holiday flights as all airports use it.

How about they introduce a PA system first, that’s fit for purpose, before a facial recognition system? Just a thought.

Re: Facial Recognition System at Turf
Not against it but I'd rather they spend some money finishing replacing the wooden seats in the CFS or as Claretius says above, getting a PA system you can actually understand.
Could someone who is on the database not just stick a big pair of glasses and cap on and beat the system? (Genuine question as I don't know how good the tech is).

You shouldn’t be handing over your card to anyone, that was stopped with Covid.

Re: Facial Recognition System at Turf
Not in NU stand ... You just hold your card to scanner (right way round obviously) and person presses foot pedal releasing turnstile mech

Years ago their was a picture of ‘me’ holding up a Halifax building society, clear as day, even I thought yep, that certainly looks like me, I half expected a knock on the door.
Nothing transpired from it, although it’s tricky writing this response when the yacht keeps bobbing about in the Med.

I am sure when my ST card was scanned last year it identified it as seniors ticket but I don't think it does now. Maybe it is being used to assess whether the ticket is age appropriate for the person using it, then the turnstile staff don't have to be relied upon to check

I have a very simple approach to these Orwellian things - I’ll tolerate them to a degree, but if I get a sense that I’m not receiving a proper service, or not being properly welcomed as a customer, then I’m done, for good.
Let’s hope this doesn’t lead to that and it stays unobtrusive and only used to prevent genuine illegality.

I have no problem with the trillions of cameras that are around because I don't break the law. If they have nothing better to do than watch me that is ok. They will sleep well with my boring life.

As long as it's not used as a way to prevent individuals from using a lending season ticket to a friend for the odd game here and there.

I suppose we can all trust the club with our data, it is not like they have already committed a fairly large data breach this season such as sending out season tickets to old addresses. Oh no wait a minute.....

The latest scheme (yes there’s money in this) is to put a face next to those 1000s of data points they (ie practically anyone who wants to bother.. see Cambridge analytic-a and that’s just the tip of the ice berg) have on you. Think Sainsbury’s and Tesco have been caught trying to sell your images plus data from those ‘crime prevention cameras’ on the self serve checkouts already.
Best advice is don’t handout your email, phone number, always use a vpn, all reject cookies and under no circumstances provide your driving licence or passport to ‘verify’ your identity EVER that’s part of the same game.

You can pay to not have the hassle.
Don’t be too disturbed when you find out what’s out there with your name next to it.
