Building for the future
There seems to be so much talent at the club under the age of 22, it’s about time we starting seeing the benefits of the academy and saving ourselves some money.
We have the likes of
Campbell
Pye
Grant
Bauress
McDermott
Bevan
Tweedy
Richardson
Mendes
Ryan
Vetro
Banel
Masara
And that’s just the u21s squad
Westley
Aduwemi

I think we will in good time, but I think for now, it's predominantly a good way around any possible FFP rules that we may/may not encounter.

Re: Building for the future
In this century we’ve had McCann, Lafferty, Chaplow, Jay and McNeil that have done anything of value from the youth setup.
Apologies if I’ve missed any but I wouldn’t expect to see many if any of the above in the thick end of a title race this season.

Not suggesting this season but when our ownership model is built on consistently being in the prem it’s hard to see how any of them properly break throughMilltown1882 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:08 pmIn this century we’ve had McCann, Lafferty, Chaplow, Jay and McNeil that have done anything of value from the youth setup.

Only Chaplow and Jay were real academy products out of those as well.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:08 pmIn this century we’ve had McCann, Lafferty, Chaplow, Jay and McNeil that have done anything of value from the youth setup.

Re: Building for the future
Course it is, Costelloe for example, extend his contract for 12 months and if he does ok till the summer, try and sell him for pure profit nextCoolClaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:07 pmI think we will in good time, but I think for now, it's predominantly a good way around any possible FFP rules that we may/may not encounter.

Think we probably see a good few in the first team squad and featuring next season if we don’t go up.

Re: Building for the future
If we don’t go up whilst the parachute payments last, I wouldn’t be averse to us taking more or a risk on younger players within reason. Obviously we’ve got a stack of young lads we’ve bought in, but it’d be nice if to start to see some of the youth team break through.
I’ve said it before, but the academy graduate board as you go into the fan zone is notably short of names from the 21st century.

Only Bevan Richardson and Aduwemi are going to progress because they are going to get minutes out on loan

Re: Building for the future
Always fascinates me in the EFL trophy that the 16 top end Cat 1 academies u21’s (city/unt/arsensl /spurs /lpool et al ) get generally easily outclassed by half strength div1/div 2 sides . Only Villa u21 got to the last 16 and were knocked out by Bradford .
Bear in mind the talent needed to be in a “ super club “ U21 , it shows the gulf that exists and how rare it is for ,say a BFC u21 to step up to our level .

Re: Building for the future
More proactive than of later years I never saw the point of loans out to non league teams
Now we are getting decent loans well organised and monitored .As an example the Dundee set up works but we now need to press on and get Bauress and McDermott minutes in the first team
Liverpool and Palace are particularly adept at blooding youngsters an example we need to follow..Especially as the name of the game is developing and selling on. Richardson looked like stepping up but his injuries have seriously slowed down his early promise.

I take your point, but it should be the old adage, if you are good enough you are old enough.123EasyasBFC wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:09 pmNot suggesting this season but when our ownership model is built on consistently being in the prem it’s hard to see how any of them properly break through
