Charlie Taylor at centre half

Post by Fretters » Tue Mar 04, 2025 4:16 pm

Why did we do this? He did relatively well but, seeing CJER this season, I can't fathom why he went out on loan with a left-back going into the centre. It wasn't as though Kompany was against throwing new signings into the team. And didn't CJ look good in pre-season?

Just something that popped into my mind earlier!

I suspect mainly because he was left-footed and we needed a left sided centre-back. CJ also hadn't as much experience then either.

Kompany did lean on some experienced pros more than he was given credit for initially.
Cork, JBG, Taylor, Jay Rod, Barnes all player key roles at different times. Could also add Cullen and Roberts to that.

He covered the left back area more often than not, when Maatsen went marauding.

He didnt go out on loan with a left back playing in the centre. He was still with the club when Taylor played at Centre Back and by the time he went out on loan we had Beyer, Harwood-Bellis, Ekdal and Al Dhakil ahead of him

This was the season before. So it's not necessarily a critisism, it was really just a point about how we signed a good footballing CB from City and didn't use him at all, instead choosing to play someone else out of position. I can't say it didn't work as we got 101 points!

He wasn’t ready for this level then, it really is that simple. Anyone who saw CJ’s start to this season could tell you that. He wasn’t really ready this time round but he didn’t take more than a handful of games to grow into it. One of the first names on the team sheet now, and fair play to him for taking his chance.

As far as I recall, Charlie Taylor struggled at Centre half and it was only the emergence of Beyer that saw us transform from a side that looked like a Play off side at best to Championship contenders.

Seems a long time ago now.

He started 17 of the 46 league games with some of those at left back

Taylor only played 23 games in all competitions, 6 of them at left back.

Would have been a great backup option for the last few months of this season to cover LCB and LB. Would have been perfect to bring on to help kill games as well

I am not a nostalgist like some of our fans who pine to bring ex players back. However the thought of Charlie Taylor at full back, in preference to Pires whilst Humphreys is injured has huge merit. Poor at going forwards, Charlie was a very good defender with very few wide men, particularly in the Championship, would get the better of him
