Referees fees
Referees fees
Not seen any discussion of refereeing issues. Referees are employed by PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Ltd) which faced a cash shortfall last summer and requested additional funding from the Premier League, EFL, and FA. Their £4m reserve fund had gone. Their operating costs were projected to be £33.7m, resulting in a deficit of £2.5m.
The Premier League provides the largest portion of PGMOL's funding Premier League referees are known as Select Group One (SG1). There are 21 full-time referees in this group with an average salary of £180,000, with a match fee around £1100 a game being added on top.
The average salary for assistant referees is £110,000.
'Select Group 2' referees - officiate Championship matches and can act as fourth officials at PL games.
Championship referees receive salaries are around £120,000 with match fees on top.
PL referees can earn performance-related bonuses.
Their performances are reviewed throughout the season including by an independent Key Match Incidents Panel, of former players and coaches, alongside a representative from PGMOL and the Premier League. Their reviews are now being made public and seem to show improvements over previous years.
Those refereeing in European games can earn £6000 a game. Sounds good but La Liga refs earn almost double that.

Re: Referees fees
It takes until you are in your 40s before you are likely to be even considered for EFL duties, although that time line seems to be getting younger each year. You have to show you're prepared to do the hard miles as a youngster and then even more so as you get into senior football. When you get appointed to the pyramid you could end up travelling 100s of miles to referee a game, where you'll often be vilified and even threatened. Yes, you get your match fee and a travel allowance, but it rarely does more than pay minimum wage for the hours you've been out of your house.
It is nice money if you reach the top though! But I wouldn't wish the journey to get there on anyone.
Re: Referees fees
The thing is, there's a lot of **** refs, but they do need an incentive to do it and be good at it. It's an utterly thankless task and even the very best of them are almost universally hated.

Former student of mine was running the line in the EFL , was getting £1k per game. Now in the PL, he did the league cup final this season, gave the offside goal that was over turned by VAR

A friends son rose up through the ranks to referee junior league in Scotland, but gave up because of the level and frequency of verbal abuse and physical threats made to him.
They earn their money!
