Book Of Football Quotations.

Post by Dazzler » Thu May 01, 2025 7:13 pm

I'm just browsing through an old book I've had for some years that I had not picked up for some time. published way back in 1993, some quotes would more than likely be deemed outdated and very much frowned upon these days, or even get that person into a spot of bother.

I've picked out 2 for now

John Fashanu, Wimbledon striker, on his brother's admission of homosexuality, in BBC TV documentary, Them and Us, 1991

"I wouldn't like to play for the same team as him or even get changed in the vicinity of him"

This one from Jack Charlton made me chuckle.

Exchange at Republic of Ireland press conference,World Cup finals, 1990

Interviewer: Jack, which of the Egyptians has impressed you?
Jack: I couldn't tell you, I don't know their names. There was the boy with the beard, the dark lad in midfield,
the 'keeper, the little dark lad who played centre-midfield, the very coloured boy, and the boy who played up front- Hassan? Hussain.

The John Fashanu quote isn’t outdated. It’s an absolute disgrace. That would always have been a disgrace. Talking about anyone like that is deplorable - talking about your brother like that is just disgraceful and he should be living in shame. I believe Justin took his own life due in no small part to his treatment by others after coming out….

The Jack Charlton quotes are of their time.

I wasn't referring to those quotes as being outdated, more these from highly regarded writers

Women's football is a game that should only be played by consenting adults in private.

Brian Glanville, journalist, 1990

A feminist colleague of mine refused to believe that I watched Arsenal, a disbelief that had its roots in the fact that we once had a conversation about a feminist novel. How could I have possibly read the book and been to Highbury?
Tell a thinking woman that you like football and you're in for a sobering glimpse of the female conception of the male.

Nick Hornby, author and former teacher, from his memoir book, Fever Pitch, 1992

My favourite Jack Charlton quote was heard live on ITV after his Boro side had won 2-0 at a very windy Turf Moor. As he was being interviewed outside in the corner of the pitch a strong gust of wind blew over the spotlight shining on the interviewer plus Jack. There was a loud smash and darkness ensued. After a few seconds a broad North Eastern voice was heard to say “that’s buggered it”😂😂

End of live transmission.

Jack Charltons memory was so poor that when in charge of the ROI squad he used to refer to David O Leary as '.........Arsenal'.

Jack Charlton called Tony Cascarino the Ice Cream seller.

Shankly, Clough and Warnock are always quotable.

Len Shackletons autobiography had a chapter “the average directors knowledge of football”. It was a blank page. Says more than words.
BTW he did self write it as he became a respected journalist.
