Approaching Referees Next Season

Post by CrosspoolClarets » Fri May 16, 2025 5:17 pm

PL to adopt new captain-only guidelines as well as new arm and hand signals in grass roots football.

I’m not a big fan although I want to see abuse reduced. Abuse isn’t just within a few yards of the ref, it can be shouted from far away, so I’m not convinced it will make a big difference. On the plus side however, it may attract some more people to be refs who have been railway signalmen or hokey-cokey dancers in a past life (sorry, I’m just imagining the fans taking the mickey from all the new signals).

It drives me mad. Have you ever seen a ref change his mind on the say-so of a player? Unless they have called it against themselves.
Nowadays it is more used for time wasting.

Whenever there is a red card there tends to be a bit of pushing and shoving of players from both sides.

If they issued retrospective bans (3 matches for example) to any player that squares up to another that would stop in an instant.

Don't worry, these initiatives only last for 2 or 3 games.

We'll be back to refereeing by consensus before any Man Utd or Man City player even has the chance to be sent off.

I didn't read the whole article but I totally agree with limiting the number of players talking to or surrounding the ref, it's got ridiculous. However I would expand it a little to lets say, the official team captain and two other 'associate captains', although only one at a time, not all. If the team captain is the goalie I can't see him running all the way to the opposite penalty area to have a chat with the ref. Plus he probably wouldn't have seen the incident in the first place.

I'm not sure why this needs a new rule. Refs should have been dishing out yellow cards for this prior to now. But refs are weak and don't referee the games properly. The respect the ref campaign fell apart just as soon as it came in because the referees don't act with any manner of authority

I'm all for the Nigel Owens approach

Full authority
Zero tolerance for players acting like babies

Yes refs will get things wrong
But the players behaviour doesn't alter that
The manager can raise the issue after the game if needs be

The goalkeeper as captain issue has been addressed as permitting an outfield alternative
