Worsley Cup 2nd round
House home to Tod in a repeat of last years epic final.
Tod won the toss and have strangely elected to bat on a possible rain affected game. Game already started late and is reduced to a 45 over game.
Tod are 10/1 from 3

Re: Worsley Cup 2nd round
Don't cup games have to be completed in full? So a reduced chase isn't possible?Somethingfishy wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 1:24 pmHouse home to Tod in a repeat of last years epic final.

They used to have to be played in full but I think they have the same rules as league games now.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 1:28 pmDon't cup games have to be completed in full? So a reduced chase isn't possible?

Oh right. Not sure I would want a cup final deciding on a reduced chase.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 1:58 pmThey used to have to be played in full but I think they have the same rules as league games now.
Although I do understand players won't wany to keep coming back to finish games.

Re: Worsley Cup 2nd round
I went to the semi-final between Ramsbottom and Burnley in 2010. There were two lengthy rain delays and because of no reduced overs, Burnley were left facing Andy Hakin at around 9:45 p.m. He's quick and the light was not good.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 2:19 pmOh right. I remember when cup games could go on every midweek evening until there was a result. Also remember suspended innings. Them were t' days.

Re: Worsley Cup 2nd round
I think teams had to suspend if they reached 130 unless they had lost a set number of wickets.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 6:05 pmI remember when cup games could go on every midweek evening until there was a result. Also remember suspended innings. Them were t' days.
There was one at Lowerhouse in the late 1950s. Burnley and then Lowerhouse both suspended at 140. Burnley then went in and scored well over 500 before Lowerhouse scored just a handful more runs. It continued for a few evenings I think.

Re: Worsley Cup 2nd round
Collie Smith scored like 300 and yes it lasted for for many nights We went on most nights but it was boring. Think it might have been in sixties. Also remember Trevor Bailey playing as sub pro for Burnley in Worsley Cup at Lowerhouse. He bowled throughout the innings then carried his bat to win the game. I remember talking to him some years later. He said he had never worked so hard to earn his match fee. After his first 6 balls he tossed the ball to the captain who tossed it back to him while saying you still have 2 more to bowl lad. 8 ball overs in those days !!!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 7:44 pmI think teams had to suspend if they reached 130 unless they had lost a set number of wickets.

Collie Smith died in 1959 so it was either 1958 or 1968.FCBurnley wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 8:00 pmCollie Smith scored like 300 and yes it lasted for for many nights We went on most nights but it was boring. Bailey was sub pro for Charlie Griffith at Lowerhouse in 1967.

I guess it was 58 then and 67 sounds right for TB Were the games then 36 overs as I think Bailey bowled 18 overs ?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 8:15 pmCollie Smith died in 1959 so it was either 1958 or 1968.

Re: Worsley Cup 2nd round
The Bailey year is definitely correct. It would have been 36 overs then (8 balls per over). He bowled through at one end and then came in around number 5 and was not out at the end. He was well in his 40s by then.

Re: Worsley Cup 2nd round
I never saw him play Burnley1989, I started watching Burnley two years later. I'm told he was a very exciting batsman to watch. The road accident and his death were covered in the 1959/60 season coverage on here.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 8:57 pmI remember reading about his death aged 26, absolutely tragic
On the Saturday after his death, a memorial service was held at Turf Moor ahead of the game (the league had refused Burnley's request to call it off). That service was attended by Bob Lord, Harry Potts and Jimmy McIlroy on behalf of the football club with McIlroy playing in the game next door an hour later. It was the day Jimmy Mac suffered a shoulder injury, got it strapped up and completed the game with his arm in a sling.

Re: Worsley Cup 2nd round
Fantastic game to watch at Walsden. Home side put into bat finishing on 336 and Great Harwood replying with 281 all out with still 7 overs left and almost certainly have won had their pro not got out when he did.
