Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
It's the rules - this competition was the sweetener from the Premier League to the National League to get them to vote in favour of scrapping FA Cup replays. Leeds won it last season.

These games should be a real challenge for our young players. The EFL trophy might be an option for our u21s but seeing the results against teams from L1 it's a big step up for even the best academies.

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
It is, I'll get some info for that closer to the game (we don't know the kick off yet but they are looking at playing it in the afternoon to attract kids) but we will have to get tickets from them ahead of the game.
The fixtures haven't been published other than Rochdale confirming theirs.

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
We didn't get in the Trophy - only 16 get in with only Bournemouth & Brentford without Cat 1 academies so it was the other 15 teams who stayed in the PL plus Leeds who finished last season above us and Sunderland.

Should one of teams in group B be Brackley?

Good to know, thanks - that's a ground I haven't yet ticked off

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
I never object to a trip to Morecambe. Hope it's sunny. (And that Morecambe FC still exists.)
Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
So we play the other cat 1 teams away too? How does that work because that means there playing home games surely games against other cat 1 academies should be split home and away?

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
No - we only play the four non-league teams in the group and then the top four go through from each group. The first chance of playing a league team is if we finish in the top two in our group.

Solihull Moors will be like a home game for me, I live just across the park from the ground!

On the subject of Solihull Moors, their home friendly today against Birmingham has been postponed following a pitch inspection. The record temperatures recorded in recent weeks left areas of the pitch at Damson Park an injury concern.

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
Since February we have only had about 30mm of rain in total, and almost half of that was on 1 day! Apparently we are in a rain shadow area from the Birmingham Plateau. Temperatures reached 34C on a couple of days last week, and 32C the previous set of hot days.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 3:49 pmOn the subject of Solihull Moors, their home friendly today against Birmingham has been postponed following a pitch inspection. Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
That's good and rightly so to be fair, do not agree with cutting of replays though just to satisfy teams competing in Europe or the premier league because non of them play strong teams anywayClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 11:33 amNon league teams get all the money too - just part of the award from the PL for voting to axe the FA Cup replays.

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
I don't think the competition has much of a future to be honest. It looked for a time as if they might have to invite teams from the level below as clubs pulled out - Altrincham, Carlisle, Yeovil, York, Eastleigh all said no thanks.
Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
When do we play Solihull and Tamworth away. Both of these are very close for me. ?

Could be a spicy one that, Rochdale absolutely hate Burnley. Weirdly the hatred has only got stronger over the years we havent played themClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 9:27 amIt is, I'll get some info for that closer to the game (we don't know the kick off yet but they are looking at playing it in the afternoon to attract kids) but we will have to get tickets from them ahead of the game.

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
There will be next to nobody there. We don't get many when we play U21 games on the Turf and the attendances for these games last season were very low, average I think was a few hundred.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 11:58 amCould be a spicy one that, Rochdale absolutely hate Burnley. Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
What are the rules on player eligibility - can we play a certain number of 1st team or over-age players?

Re: ARTICLE: Burnley to play in the National League Cup
I'm assuming because it's a competition for our under-21s that we will be able to play some older players, I think it's three plus goalkeeper, although I doubt we will.claretsmart wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 3:10 pmWhat are the rules on player eligibility - can we play a certain number of 1st team or over-age players?
