Tattoo Safety

Post by basil6345789 » Sun Jul 20, 2025 9:14 pm

Are COSHH sheets mandated to be provided by tattoo artists for the inks used (carcinogens, etc), what is the regulation for this practice? The vast majority of inks appear to come from China.

I just had an allergy test that involved 10 pricks on each arm which i didn't overly enjoy.

Don't think i'll be looking like the ******* child of a school desk and an ordinance survey map anytime soon.....

The EU brought in a ban on inks containing certain chemicals, however one of the Brexit benefits is that the UK is free to crack on using carcinogenic inks.

Cheers Nige!

Most reputable artists use high quality inks anyway.

I had all my tattoos done in a crack den up Burnley Wood. Made sure I shared needles too so that cancer would be the last thing I’d be worried about.

Every time I have an MRI they ask if I have any tattoos and then they ask where they were done. I had mine done in Bulgaria which passes the test for the scan :)

I think it's more about fat Tony who has all the diseases known to man that they'd be more worried about.

Not getting tattoed has worked for me safety-wise and nowadays, it appears that the best way of expressing ones individuality is in not having any tats.

Same. What i don't get is people sauntering in and just picking a pre-designed one from a book "Flash" i think they call it.

Then again, not my body is it, so each to their own

Saw a brilliant one of a robotic tattoo on an arm - looked like; well... a robot :)

Perfectly done though and he had the arms. Now, when he's 90 and is built like a racing snake? Not sure.

You always get comments like “When they get old”. You do realise just how long tattoos have been around and how popular they were throughout the 50s/60s/70s etc.

Reminds me of Only Fools and Horses when Delboy is having his blood taken and they were discussing Rodney.

Nurse gets the needle and says: "Just a little prick"

Delboy replies with: "Oh, you know him then"

My most Tory take though is that any upper body tattoo visible outside of a long sleeve shirt, especially face tattoos, aside from cultural / religious ones, should be banned.

Never gonna be a thing, mind

Never mind the carcinogens, what about all the nanobots those pesky Chinese are putting in the ink to steal our data?

A young man truly in love with his girlfriend decided to have her name tattooed on his penis. Her name was Wendy, and the tattoo was done while the penis was erect, so when it was not erect all you could see was W Y. Shortly after the couple was married they were honeymooning in Jamaica the man was in a bathroom in Jamaica, and standing next to him was a Jamaican man who also had a W Y on his penis. The American said to him "Oh is your girl named Wendy too?" The Jamaican replied, "No mister that says 'Welcome to Jamaica Have a Nice Day'."

When I was lad, only hard -mainly dangerous- blokes got tattoos.

Now, it's exactly the opposite.

Well I grew up 50s/60s/70s and they were considered a sign of prison or the forces, primarily navy. To me they grew out of the American music scene late 80s, then spread to gang culture.

I’d always said I if I was going to get one it would have to mean something and not be something “generic”

Aged 40 I got my first one done, after grandad died I got his army number done in roman numerals on the inside of my arm

I’m now about to arrange having a second one done of him from our trip to Bayeux when he visited the War Cemetery and laid a wreath

Son-in-law is a fine read but I’ve never fancied one.
If I was to get one it would be a Lancashire Red Rose with “Made in Lancashire” in a semi-circle above and “Copyright Tommy & Margaret. 1953. In a semi-circle below. On the back of my neck.
