Who here owns a VR headset? Is it Meta and Oculus as the best/main 2? Definitely interested in getting one of these at some point.
Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
Just wondered what is the point of this? Just show the actual game!

I've only tried one once, I think it was a rollercoaster, I'm not sure how it would work with a live game, but it's not aimed at us oldies

I’m only watching the Virtual Reality games this season. Our march to Champions League qualification spearheaded by 30-goal Lyle Foster.

The Meta Quest 3 is probably the best out there in the market at the moment.ollieclarets8 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 10:47 amWho here owns a VR headset? Is it Meta and Oculus as the best/main 2? Definitely interested in getting one of these at some point.
I could see the reasoning of watching highlights in VR maybe, but the live game? Nah. Especially when it is just 3d representations of the players, not sure what the point is really.
I saw a 5 minute MLS preview on the apple vision pro recently and that is the future of broadcasting (if you want to experience being there), but the streaming resources needed for live spatial video currently aren't affordable yet, maybe in 5 years.

This will blow the minds of some.
Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
It’ll be live 3d footage of the game not 3d representations of the players I would imagine. It’s an interesting idea, although not one I have the technology to engage with.Ric_C wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 11:51 amThe Meta Quest 3 is probably the best out there in the market at the moment.

Apparently their aim is to be at the forefront of fan engagement. No doubt some in the CFS may have a view on that.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
I have very mixed feelings about this.
I understand the attraction for fans that live far away, but I feel it could be another nail in the coffin for football, and entice people away from attending on match day which is the opposite of what we should be trying to achieve.
Living in Kent, I don’t get to many games, but I don’t think I would use this out of principle. It’s a slippery slope that could have dire consequences.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
If you look at the trailer on the Burnley express article, it shows 3d models. Maybe linked to trackers on the players. Can't see the players wearing 360 cams, the referee maybe?
Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
I’d ignore the trailer, this is about you having a virtual seat in the crowd and watching the match as a spectator.

I wouldn’t worry too much, it’ll be a pale imitation of actually being there. Plus, once the novelty has worn off, those not at the match will probably prefer the multiple angles and replays that normal tv coverage offers.TsarBomba wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 1:43 pmI have very mixed feelings about this.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
Sky did a version of this a few years ago.
I was cynical.
I own an Occulus 2 and I watched a game on it.
It was surprisingly very good.
Fixed view point but it felt more real than 2D viewing of a match as you could move your head and you see the whole pitch at once, like being at a game.
At first it blew my mind and took my breath away a bit.
If it's as good then I like it. That said Sky don't do it anymore.

I had a tv with 3D capabilities not too long ago and remember watching my first match in 3D on Sky Sports. It totally revolutionised how we consume live sports, and televised football has never been the same since.

No surprise that our club is involved in this given that ALK are (very) minor shareholders in the operator
It will also be a trial for the Premier League, who are also shareholders

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality

I remember my first match in 3D. 16th August 1975, Burnley v Arsenal at the Turf

I had a 3D tv too and quite liked watching matches in 3D. Problem was I only had one pair of 3D glasses so if anyone else wanted to watch it was back to normal tv. The glasses cost about £30 so it ramped up the cost of a 3D tv set. 3D sort of works on the big screen in a cinema, but on a small screen in the corner of your room it’s a bit rubbish.

It was a decent novelty - to be honest I didn’t get the tv because it was 3D, it just seemed to be a standard feature for a period. Watched some movies too which were decent, but yeah the glasses were a pain and also gave me headaches.martin_p wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 2:40 pm![]()

Don't muddle 3D tv and virtual reality. Literally different realms.

The TV I have now was bought I think around 2013. Still a decent TV with 3D tech but the novelty wore off pretty quickly, to the point I've not used the 3D glasses / technology on it since 2014. In fact I think I've even lost the glasses.

Preston v Liverpool was on ITV and at 3pm .
We get this !

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
The latter can be brilliant, but I’m not entirely convinced watching sport, where you’re effectively stuck to your seat and the only movement you get is too pivot around a single point, is a best use of it. I’ve seen some great VR video where you’re on the move and that really does give a great impression of being there. Some VR games are fantastic too (but some are rubbish).Awayfromburnley wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 2:48 pmDon't muddle 3D tv and virtual reality. Literally different realms.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
Whilst i can't see VR matches being of use to me unless our ownership decide to relocate my North Stand Upper seat to the US, does anyone know if this maybe a way around the Saturday 3pm blackout on league games. Does having a VR match being shown live constitutue a broadcast?
Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t, it’s still live video even if you need a particular app and hardware to view it.Orangebernard wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 4:08 pmWhilst i can't see VR matches being of use to me unless our ownership decide to relocate my North Stand Upper seat to the US, does anyone know if this maybe a way around the Saturday 3pm blackout on league games. ALK may get the plaudits for this innovation but Clive Holt first suggested this at Burnley in the late 80s. Yes, the technology didn't exist but the vision was there nonetheless.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
I'm not going to knock it as I have zero idea how this works or what you get but if I imagine being able to watch the game from my chosen virtual seat in virtual 3d with vr so good that I cannot even tell it's not real then I can 'go' to a match without travelling 8 hours, being unable to use my favoured seat because I'm a walk on who cannot buy a ticket as demand outstrips supply then I'm all in. Mix it up with being able to turn my head in any direction and see the person in the stadium next to me etc, get up and change seats at any time and see a different angle then I think it would be an incredible concept. Of course I don't think that is what it would be but there will come a day. Once upon a time people would have laughed at motorised vehicles travelling 2 miles an hour behind a man with a flag and said it will never catch on.
Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
Funnily enough, when I ran a customer service centre, for BT, one of my team managers and I brainstormed our, 'office of the future' in the 90s and working from home but being tuned into your work colleagues (of your choice) was part of the set up, as well as at the desk, online training, which was ot even thought of, at the time.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Wed Jul 30, 2025 4:55 pmALK may get the plaudits for this innovation but Clive Holt first suggested this at Burnley in the late 80s. For rest time, headset with music and video availability (sounds like VR) and an exercise area/ mini gym. We also set up how the office desk set up would look, which also introduced hot desking. ack then, even headsets for online order entry, was not done, in BT.
By chance I then had a visit from a professor and Phd student asking my thoughts on the office of rhe future! I called the team manager into my office and we repeated our thoughts. It all got written up and produced as part of a thesis. Even published!
I did achieve the desk set up, headsets, online order entry and hot desking. Rest area too but without the personal headsets and the gym area didn't happen. Working from home, followed later.

I've had a go on it to play my Xbox games.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
Agree with others on here that this will likely end up like 3D TV, but pleased our club are trialling it. Good PR and shows we’re innovating which is no bad thing.
Don’t think it will deter people who already go to games from watching live but I expect it will give those who usually watch on TV a different viewing option.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
I’d be grateful if someone can outline the steps and cost involved for watching the game on Saturday
I’m assuming 1) buy a headset, but which one and how much are they?
After that ? Is it an app? Website? Free? Subscription? One off fee?
Thanks in advance !

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
What’s the point in this?
Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
Given this is a test that may or may not result in something at sometime in the future if you haven’t got, or we’re planning to buy a headset then this is not for you. The headsets are £400 - £500. I suspect everything beyond that (the Premier League player app and the match itself) will be free given it’s essentially a developing service.
Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
I think the problem is they are a novelty that soon wears off. Even the best examples like Resident Evil 7 was better being played on a tv. No one is really making any decent games for them- the developers seem to have given up.Claretfanatic1982 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 31, 2025 10:24 amIt can't be the meta quest 3 if you are saying they are rubbish and the tech is miles away from being any good.

From what I can understand, it extends far beyond just gaming. I quite like the look of virtual tours for instance. Being able to walk around a medieval castle or other historic site without actually being there.
I can see a time where people won't physically go abroad to visit things, they'll experience it via VR instead.

Re: Burnley v Lazio in Virtual Reality
Is it a love video stream of the match, as if you were sat in a seat, or 3D generated models of the players? The trailer makes it look like the latter. Can't see they'd have gone to the effort of creating 3D models just for the trailer either.
