Bobby Seith news

Post by ClaretTony » Thu Jul 31, 2025 11:03 am

I didn't just want to write his name in the thread title because you might have thought he'd passed away which he very definitely hasn't.

His name came up on the Colin McDonald thread last week, being of an age, and I said that I'd try to find out how he was doing at the grand old age of 93 and having had a leg amputated just over five years ago.

I started by contacting Dundee FC and thanks to them they put me in touch with Bobby's son Robert who has emailed me a couple of times. He said his dad is fine other than a little bit of short term memory loss and he is very happy. He still talks football, he still talks Burnley and he's recently had a visit from a former Rangers player who was there when Bobby was a coach there. That visitor was Sir Alex Ferguson who has kept in touch.

He played his final game for Burnley just a few months before I went to my first game, so he was the last Burnley player that I didn't see play for us.

Really nice bloke too. Had two long chats with him on the phone back in 2010 when I invited him to a CM dinner.

Tim Quelch wrote this for UTC about him a few years ago.

Yes another one caught in Bob Lord’s crossfire.
A tidy player, glad he has reached a ripe old age.

Good to hear. My work brought me into contact with (I think) his nephew who ran a landscaping company in Leyland at the time. When he found out that I was a Burnley fan, he said his uncle had played for them, his name was Bobby Seith. It was just a couple of months after Bobby was half time guest at the turf and I was able to say that I not only knew of him but had recently seen him. That must have been about 20 years ago at least.

Glad to hear that Bobby is doing well. As well as can be expected for anybody at 93 years old anyway. UTC.

I saw Bobby Seith play for us many times when I was a youngster. He was a very good midfielder, strong in the tackle, ran with the ball well, and very rarely gave the ball away. Not a pacey player, but a good work horse with plenty of skill. The kind of guy you always like to have in your team. I’m glad he’s still doing well.

Was he the first to get an English and Scottish League winners medal?
I know the Burnley one was received about 40 years later but should have been 1960. But the Dundee one was 1962

Aye, that's right. He was the half time guest when he finally picked up his medal I think.

It was 1999 around October. I don’t think he’s been since.

Have a picture in an old football annual of the Dundee team. Some handy players Alan Gilzean, Ian Ure who had good careers in England later on

I was only young at the time, but I can still picture him as a good player bringing the ball out of defence and through midfield.
