Frank Lampard retires

Post by Sidney1st » Thu Feb 02, 2017 12:22 pm

He's announced his retirement today at 38.

At club level, he will go down as one of the greats in English football for me.

Over 250 goals from midfield, that will take some beating.

Useless for england. If they'd have just let gerrard run the show, we may have achieved something..

Should've put yourself in for the managers job then Saxo, seeing as it's the managers who couldn't get the best out of Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard....

Id say scholes was a very good player. But I would say bobody ever questioned why he wasn't played more for England or said how great he was. Suddenly years after he retires Xavi and Zidane say he was great player and people latched on to that. He's become world class the past few years.

But Lampard? Nah. Chelsea leading goal scorer. Scored many important goals.

Assuming he stays in The Premier League and remains a midfielder, I think Delle Alli is very well placed to beat that record (I'm not sure Lampard made it 250 career goals), especially when you look at the number of games it has taken him to get to 20 goals (52).

Best English midfielder of his generation.

Didn't need to drag Chelsea to things, he was good enough to be in a consistently successful side.

Less dramatic than Gerrard sure but a far better midfielder, particularly attacking.

Lampard became a bit of a luxury player as his career dragged on, that's why I feel some don't rate him. He wasn't as "box to box" as Gerrard but that doesn't mean he wasn't a class player. Found the right space at the right time, a true skill by itself, and he had the composure to hit the back of the net.

Definitely one of the best Midfielders to grace the Premier league in my book.

More appearances. More goals. Better ratio of goals to games. More goals for his country. More honours. Apart from that Gerrard might have had a shout...

THE key player of all Chelseas modern success. Chelsea won so much because of him (and Terry). He wasn't a bit part player. He wasn't here to make the numbers up. The team was built around him.

He could tackle but it was the weakest part of his game admittidly, but where where he lacked in those areas he made up for in others.

He was under appreciated at international level.

Saxo is just refusing to recognise it because they didn't play for Liverpool.

Gerrard stood out at Liverpool because 70% of the players around him weren't that good.
Would he have been as stand out at a club with better players?
I doubt it in all honesty.

The Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard question is generally quite tiresome because they were 3 very different players.
I'd say Scholes was a better technical player, Gerrard the box to box type and Lampard the goal scoring midfielder.

Everyone has their favourites, but none of them were really used to their full potential by England.
England's midfield should've been built around 1 of them, not two or all 3 of them, but a succession of England managers were to weak to make that decision.

Did real Madrid and barca constantly chase lampard throughout his career? The only club that came in for him was major league soccer at the end of his career.

Scholes was the most complete of the three and had the ability to dictate a game. Lampard was the better goalscorer and second of the three. Slippy G was a great leader and all action player but always seemed to bottle it, other than the Champions league final.

Not Lampards fault but the fact Scholes was shunted out to the right to accommodate the other two, leading to his eventual international retirement, was a travesty.

Couldn't tell you, but you're forgetting Real Madrid like to sign 'Galactico's' , big name players to get the shirts sold.
Lampard wasn't one of those because he was playing in a better team the Gerrard, so didn't have to keep dragging them out of the mire, so his name wasn't in the press as much as Gerrards.

Why is it?
Gerrard kept getting the headlines because he kept having to drag Liverpool over the line.

Chelsea were the better all round team with better managers, their trophy haul has proven that.
Lampard wasn't the biggest name in that squad, but he was probably one of the most important, he generally just got on with it though and was allowed to flourish in his role.

Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard (anyone else on the Turf when he scored his first Chelsea goal in a pre-season?) were all class players. Anyone who says different needs to go and watch darts as they don't have the faintest clue about football.

Scholes was the stand out player though and the best English player of my lifetme

I forgot to mention something about Scholes with this one.

A number of clubs sniffed around wanting Scholes.
Inter's president was willing to cough up £30 million in 2001 I think it was, but Scholes' agent told him not to bother, because the player was only interested in playing for UTD.
Not once did Scholes angle for a move away, didn't flutter his eyes at other clubs and made it clear he was never going to leave UTD.
Same with Giggs by the way.

Can you say the same about Gerrard?

Why are you so happy about players being loyal to man utd?

A common trate I found with fans of yours I met when you were lower league was they went to Burnley home games and utd games at OT when Burnley were away.

That is 100% truth and reason I reckon so many Burnley fans defend man utd.

Gerrard was bound to stand out when surrounded by the dross Liverpool signed throughout his career. No denying his contribution but his trophy cabinet is rather bare in comparison to Lampard and Scholes who were class players in class teams.

Absolute tripe there Saxo, you're normally tolerable but you've got rather mundane recently. You do not need to be affiliated with a club to appreciate players who have shown that sort of loyalty. Its no wonder it's dissapperaring from football with morons like you.
