Strong speculation this morning that Mark Clattenburg will quit as a Premier League referee before the next set of games in just over as week's time - off to the MLS apparently after becoming disillusioned by the lack of support from PGMOL.

Has he decided who he's going to 'support' in the MLS?

I'm surprised it's taken so long for a match official to get a better deal elsewhere, good luck to him if it happens

No!!!! Favourite ref in the premier league. Not because he's a good ref but simply for his over elaborate style of signalling his decisions. As camp as Christmas.

Agree about the poser bit, but Clattenburg and Oliver are by far the two best refs that we have seen this season.

The refs in this country are treated terribly. I honestly don't know why anyone would do it.

Players are back to pushing and abusing refs again after the early season clamp down.

It's difficult as they do make mistakes and we do talk about the mistakes but as long as they are impartial and serious about career professional development they should get the strongest possible backing from PGMOL

I don't pay attention to the unions / organisations that look after the refs, I don't feel a need to worry about it, so long as they're happy.

Refs need to grow a set then and start dishing out cards to players who're verbally abusing them, trying to intimidate them or physically handle them.
The fact they don't really do it is part of the problem.

When we had the ex ref on Clarets mad Fox 40 he explained that the PGMOL put pressure on refs to accept it and not be the star of the show. That it would cause big problems if they kept sending the potty mouth Wayne Rooney off for starters.

The only way to stop it is for a live mic that TV viewers here, but it will never happen.

It's caused more problems not sending off players who verbally abuse the ref.

Maybe the PGMOL needs to look at it from the refs point of view instead of worrying about someone like Rooney being sent off for being a gob shite

Somewhere there is a forum for referees where some are trying to claim he's not that good a referee and he's a disruptive influence on the dressing room.

He has chosen Saudi Arabia because he is to become the head of Saudi Arabian refereeing on a rolling 1 year contract.
As someone who has known him since he started refereeing in our local leagues back in the 1990s, refereeing senior football at the age of 15, I wish him well, he has been a good ambassador over the years.
I have a feeling that Lord Elleray's lobbying against him within UEFA has had quite a bearing on his decision to quit and go off to pastures new.

Also seems very odd his bosses have a weird love in with Atkinson who is way below Clattenburg's level.

I bet some would panic if they saw their surname, "Saudi", "rolling" and "head" in one paragraph.

Fair play to him though, they're offering him a huge sum I imagine (I turned down a year in Saudi earlier this year, probably because I knew they wouldn't take kindly to satirical jokes like this one, that I wouldn't be able to resist!).

Sadly he was judged by his English peers not on his refereeing ability but on his life decisions outside of the 90 minute game. We have somehow managed to get rid of our best ref and the only people who are happy with that are the old farts who try to ruin the game at every possible turning. Good luck abroad, become the Worlds Best Ref and earn a wad in the process.

Only Clattenburg and Atkinson are on the UEFA Elite Referees List and it would seem that, as things stand, unless someone else is promoted to that list in the near future, there will be no English referees at the World Cup Final in Russia because I think that Martin Atkinson may well be too old by then.

Always comes across as one who is very fond of himself. My over-riding memory of him is of him going apparently bonkers against Hull at the Turf last season when he booked everything that moved in the last 20 minutes or so. Can only speculate on what has attracted him to the fabulously-wealthy oil-rich dictatorship of Saudi Arabia.

The article in todays paper, says he was on £100,000 here and will be on £3-500,000 in his new job. Also states that he was not the flavour of the month ever with his English bosses who apparently didn't want him to get the European Championship Final. I hadn't realised Howard Webb has done this job in Saudi too. 14 teams in their PL and he will probably Ref one of the games each week and oversee the other refs and the development. Good luck to the chap. When will we ever learn springs to mind.
