Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
I, too, was thinking about the number of occasions I've trod the same path for a league cup tie on a late September evening in years gone by. Perfect night to play football, lowly opposition stinging from a home defeat 72 hours earlier. It was all set up ......as it was all those times in seasons past. Well, at least any Man City officials didn't get a glimpse of their opposition at the weekend so not a totally wasted evening.

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
To me it looked more like a Championship game. We had several players playing lastnight who I'd put as top-end Championship level (certainly not Premier League), facing a team who had just been relegated from the Championship but will probably come back up.

It looked (even before kick off when the team was announced) like Parker had picked 11 players who he wanted/needed to give game time to regardless of their positions. Then he started looking at how he could line them up and make a cohesive team. The answer was you couldn't!

He also didn't look concerned when we were 2-0 down. But more cup games = more minutes you can give fringe players so I'm surprised he didn't at least put more firepower on the bench, just in case.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Wed Sep 24, 2025 6:09 pmIt looked (even before kick off when the team was announced) like Parker had picked 11 players who he wanted/needed to give game time to regardless of their positions. Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
Maybe Parker was ok with sacrificing the result for the chance to see how most of the '2nd string' adapt and perform when under a bit of pressure
Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
A fair report as always. Thanks. But to me they looked a team lacking both match fitness and touch. A group that hadn't had much game time together previously. And it really showed.
Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
The warning of the way Derby played against us, should have made the players aware, opposing teams from a lower division want to win, as it’s a feather in their cap.
Last nights performance was abysmal. As said Hannibal tried to get the ball moving forward while holding onto the ball. The display of passing around from the goalie to the defenders at goal kicks, inside the area showed they’d no idea what they would do next with the ball. We lost possession so many times from the goal kicks. While losing late in the game, they persisted in the same tactics. As though they didn’t consider the urgency to get the ball up the pitch, to increase our chance of creating a goal. Parker stood there motionless, as though losing didn’t matter to him. Well it did matter to me and hurt, as it always does. Cardiff did deserve the victory, but the way most of our team played, showed they haven’t the will to try and win games and badly let the supporters down again.
Fleming did try and his few efforts got no reward. When he was substituted, as he headed to the dug out,Parker tried to catch hold of him, I’d guess to make a comment, but Fleming brushed him aside and unsurprisingly didn’t look a happy player.

You only had to look at the bench to gauge how serious we treated the game.Teams who play a weakened team in the cups usually have a few game changers on the bench.Reminds me of Preston in latter stages of FA cup
My fear is that had we got through by the skin of our teeth we would have played the next round exactly the same way

We played the previous round against Derby in exactly the same way with none of those who’d started in the previous league game involved at all.warksclaret wrote: ↑Wed Sep 24, 2025 8:57 pmYou only had to look at the bench to gauge how serious we treated the game.Teams who play a weakened team in the cups usually have a few game changers on the bench.Reminds me of Preston in latter stages of FA cup

Not the same last season in the FA Cup. I think there were nine changes to start but we had Roberts, Egan-Riley, Laurent & Edwards on the bench.

What firepower are you referring to? We have a odd few game changers that I wouldn't exactly describe as a firepower we could have scraped it without demolishing. More a meek submissive concession than a blitzkrieg.ollieclarets8 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 24, 2025 6:26 pmHe also didn't look concerned when we were 2-0 down. Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
A travesty! A complete second string eleven with not one player from Saturday’s starting eleven on the bench. For me Flemming and Edwards had grown into the game and looked like they could muster a goal or two in the closing stages. What happens? The both get substituted. Okay, Tresor should have come on but for someone else. And as for Flemming being taken off to give the young Clark a little match time with five minutes to go?!?! Bonkers.

Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
We did although it would have been more difficult to work out had we lost to a team nowhere near us alphabetically. As it happened, with Burton and Cambridge out, either of us would have got the same number.

Noticed something weird as well from the Sky camera. When the 6 minute injury time board went up it showed Parker rolling his eyes as if he wanted it to end before that! I certainly did!
Re: REPORT: Another League Cup disaster for the Clarets
Been mentioned a few times about SP on camera as the board went up. I'm not so sure. I think he was surprised there were only 6 mins following the slow substitutions by Cardiff, how many players they made, as well as our subs.

Disappointment rather than disaster.
