Sheffield United FA Cup 1993 (crush)

Just seen the goals from the Sheffield United FA Cup game from 1993 on that @burnleygoals twitter account.
Does anybody remember any crushing that day?
I remember being right at the front and the Burnley fans surging forwards every time Burnley attacked.
Not sure how bad it was but I remember being terrified as a ten year old.
By the time Adrian Heath put Burnley 2-0 up, the police came round and took a load of us out of the terrace and put us in the main stand instead.
Wasn't somebody killed or badly injured on the Longside in the replay?

I seem to remember an incident involving Nathan Blake where things got a bit nasty as he wound up the Longside but can't remember if it was that cup replay. Should have won that game at Bramhall Lane. It was a great away following and a spicy atmosphere.

I got told off by my dad for swearing very loudly when Sheff United equalized

I was sat in the tier above the terracing and I remember seeing young lads being moved into a different part of the ground.

Wasn't aware of any problems but I was sat in the Bramall Lane stand upper tier. I think it was Littlejohn who was involved with the Longside at the replay.

Yes a load of kids were moved to the stand to the right.
We were on the opposite side near the corner flag where there was still a bit of room.

I can't t remember Nathan Blake playing in any of those games. Adrian Littlejohn was the villain of the games though, I can't remember why though. Brian Deane was his strike partner.

Ah yes, I think it was Littlejohn. Blake was such a nasty piece of work I was just ready to blame him for anything!

There was crushing, i was 13 at the time, the most scared i've ever been at a football match, people were moved to the main stand.

A Sheffield United fan died of a heart attack at the replay. Nothing to do with crushing, though.

I remember the FA Cup tie there in 1962 when the wall collapsed at the front of the Shoreham Street End. We were at the other end that day and thankfully there were no serious injuries.

Was it a three sided ground then, with the cricket ground on the left as we looked out to the pitch ?

We were on the terrace and I remember the kids getting led out to the stand at the side. Was freezing that day, the game did well to survive.
Littlejohn was the bad guy because of this

Bizarre that Heath was sent off as well.

Best atmosphere at an away game I can remember 7000 behind the goal in what is the best stand you can have. Terracing underneath the seats made sure all the noise carried and we had a further 1000 in the home stand.
24 years ago today, madness.

Should be noted that we were a Division 3 side on the day and they were in the top flight.

I'd agree with that. I also remember there being huge amounts of confetti thrown when the teams came out that totally obscured people's views for a minute or so. Seemed to be a spell of people throwing confetti back then; not sure what started it or what brought it to an end though?!

Yes a great game and day, freezing fog, large crowd behind the goal on steeply banked terrace but disappointing draw in the end. Robbie Paynter got one I think.

I just watched that clip from the game linked above. Those two tackles before the bit of argy-bargy - would be a red for one of those now but not even a free kick for either of them in those times.
At least the recipients of the lunges just got up and got on with it though rather than roll around punching the ground etc.

I was at the front with my younger brothers and my cousin. We were pinned up against the front was quite scary at the time. My brothers were moved to the stand at the side.

There was an incident in the home game involving Littlejohn and a lad called Lee (surname may have been Hurst) who lived near me on Sycamote Avenue was quite badly injured from memory.
Not seen or heard of him in 20 plus years until I saw this thread and it jogged my memory!

There was a huge phase of throwing folks tape, toilet rolls and till receipts etc
I spent a full week ripping newspapers into squares for a game at West Brom only for them to confiscate them on arrival. I was gutted and that put a stop to me doing that again

The lad was in year below me at Teds at the time. Was big surge when Littlejohn celebrated in front of the longside and he was injured. Heard a story Littlejohn visited him in hospital and bought him a new computer but that could be an urban myth.
If there had been fencing up at Bramhall Lane would have been a lot of injuries for the first part of the game I remember my feet not being on the floor there were that many packed in.

Heath scored both goals in the first game and the first goal in the replay.
Nathan Blake was trying to wind up our fans before the home game in 92 against Cardiff that we won 3-1 and assured us of promotion.

Follow on from that amazing day out in Derby not long before.
Brilliant turn out by our lot again.
Should have won though, being 2-0 up.

Think it was probably the last bit of 'cup fever' we've had. As you say, it was on the back of that fabulous afternoon a year earlier at Derby and with no ticket restrictions people really attended in huge numbers.

I remember the day well, I also remember being crushed and if it weren't for my Dad I think I could have been seriously hurt...
The atmosphere was something else, I could have cried when they equalised...

It was ticket only for Burnley. I remember as I went down about a week before the game to get tickets for my dad and uncle in the home end when they allocated us an extra 1k tickets.

Mine and my brothers confetti at Wembley was confiscated. My dad told the steward he knew exactly how many pieces were in each bag and that he wanted a receipt for it all to a bemused looking steward. He causec such a fuss they eventually walked him round to the main office at Wembley and gave him a receipt!!!

Remember a steward saying they only gave so much of their ground to an away team when Wednesday or Leeds come. He was a Wednesday fan and was nearly as gutted as me about the result.

I was there.
The weather was very very cold. Was the pitch not a bit frozen ? Or was it the terraces ? I seem to remember there was lots of ice about on that day.
They stuffed us in the replay. 4-1 I think

Went to the game with a lad from work and his younger brother. We were at the front but we stayed where we were after a lot got moved to the right if my memory serves me correct.
Brian Deane got a hat trick in the replay in a 4-1 defeat for us, again if my memory stands...

Replay was 4-2. Deane hat-trick then the irksome Littlejohn with the 4th.
There must be something about the surname Littlejohn which makes people utter *****.

They were garbage, until they brought Deane on, who equalized in stoppage time.
The turning point was Mick Conroy hitting the bar around 70 minutes. We got nervous and dropped back ever more deeper. Prior to that we'd played all the football.
Great game and day out with the inevitable unfortunate last kick equalizer thrown in.

I believe that this was my elder son’s first ever away game. I remember him utterly loving it at the time (he was four,) and it’s one of my favourite memories of his childhood. I mentioned this game to him on last year’s anniversary and he said he didn’t remember it at all. Gutted is an understatement.
