I think he missed a pen, but other than that, not sure what their problem was with him.

He had a very good game and his ruling on the non-pen looked to have been made in consultation with his AR who had a side on view, as did I. Defoe realised he was going nowhere and the ball would probably run out of play so he almost stopped in his tracks and there was slight contact from Darikwa.
The Sunderland fans were moaning because Borini was not being rewarded for his constant efforts at trying to con the ref, he spent more time on his arse than he did on his feet.

Best we've had only error not booking Defoe for simulation.

Not sure about simulation but Defoe certainly should have been booked for grabbing the ball as the ref didn't award a free kick.

It was simulation for me, I thought that he'd blown up for that so he should have booked him. Did he blow up for handball after he'd gone down?

Don't know why he blew but Defoe grabbed the ball before any whistle. If ref has given that he should book him too. Likewise if he's awarded free kick for simulation. Either way Defoe should be getting carded.

The free kick was given for handball - something similar happened on the Turf recently when George Boyd (I think) handled the ball when he thought he's got a free kick. That's not a yellow card offence. If Attwell deemed Darikwa not to have fouled Defoe then to give a free kick for handball with no further action is absolutely correct.

Surely that's deliberate handball, touching the ball without a whistle, therefore a yellow?

It's deliberate handball but not a yellow.
The only mandatory yellow cards for handball are:
Commits a foul or handles the ball to interfere with or stop a promising attack
Handles the ball in an attempt to score a goal or in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a goal

When he grabbed it it looked like he was going to try to throw it into our net, therefore it's a yellow
