No good- he can't decide whether he's on the right or the left and just farts around somewhere in between.

Re: Tristram Hunt
Give over he is centre right.
Stoke voted strongly for leave. I think this will be the by-election that UKIP win. They may even win Copeland as well. They were second in 2015, with the tories a close 3rd. The lib dems were nowhere, but are likely to pick up remainers. Nuttall will probably stand, but I think this is a seat that is due to go under the boundary changes.
Labour may even come 4th now, because they have a looney left leader/new membership and are all over the place on Brexit.

A sad loss, Labour needs articulate intellectuals who challenge the Marxist Mascot.

That could be applied to ABC's opinions of the team, the formation and/or the lineup.LeadBelly wrote:No good- he can't decide whether he's on the right or the left and just farts around somewhere in between.

The ambiguity (for the last two) was intended. I didnt try hard enough to also get a "shandy" reference in there.

Re: Tristram Hunt
To bring a note of seriousness to this thread, this could turn out to be a more significant event than it at first seems.
If Labour lose heavily in the resulting by-election - which I suspect and hope they might do, then it could finally mark the beginning of the end for Corbyn, or the beginning of a new left of centre alliance.

Re: Tristram Hunt
If it were up to me, and i'm well aware it isn't, MP's would not be allowed to resign during the tenure of open parliament.
You wanted to be an MP and serve the public, so serve us properly and to the best of your availability until a GE is called. Wanna pack it in? Wait til then. Until then, get on with doing what you promised us all you would do.

Re: Tristram Hunt
I think post 15 is on the right lines and probably that is TH's intention. He may well have discussd this move with other centre right (in the Labour party) people.
I don't blame him at all if that is his intention and he is doing this country a favour if it stops Momentum and the others hiding behind JC.

Re: Tristram Hunt
FWIW, I think it's fairly convenient for Hunt that he's been offered this job, but even if he were a current front bench Minister in the Govt. he'd be daft to turn down this opportunity.
He describes it a s a dream job, and I wouldn't argue with that.
If he doesn't muck it up, it's a job for life, working in a much better environment, (and on much higher pay I would imagine).

Re: Tristram Hunt
Regrettably, I disagree. Whilst I was firmly in favour of Leave, I think that many of the electorate now cannot see the point of voting UKIP, as they see it as " mission accomplished ". Their vote was down by around 7% in yesterday's Sunderland local by-election, and that pattern has largely been replicated in other local contests since the Referendum.summitclaret wrote: Stoke voted strongly for leave. Before Labour breathe too much of a sigh of relief, Labours vote share went from 54.9% to 25% in the same seat, with the Lib/Dems coming from no-where to win with 45% of the vote.
In large parts of the traditional Labour northern areas, I think the Lib/Dems will start to benefit from their old role as being the protest party. We all know there are many people who wouldn't vote Conservative as long as they had a hole in their a**e, but I can't see too many of these favoring Corbyn's style of Labour either, with his historic support for the IRA, anti-nucleur movement & various unsavory Marxist regimes. Throw in Diane Abbott, and the sneering Emily Thornberry and it doesn't look good..
It may even mean that Burnley may go Lib/Dem again if there's an election called within the next 18 months, although from what I hear, the Lib/Dems are the least of Julie Cooper's worries if she wants to keep representing this area....

Re: Tristram Hunt
Labour used to be the party of talent who made the Tories look dim despite their privileged education, now they are little more than a cheer group devoid of practical ideas letting the rich get richer and doing nothing to create the fairer society they set out to achieve.
