Have we signed two new strikers?

Post by ClaretTony » Sat Jan 14, 2017 6:06 pm

I saw these two outside today and they reckoned they could form a good partnership up front. I'm not so sure.

Shin pads were no good against Andy - you needed a suit of armour.

Willy Irvine, Burnley's best ever goal scorer (in my opinion).
I can recommend his biography, it truly shows the ups and downs of his life as a footballer and a local businessman, going from the top to the very bottom and then picking himself back up.

They are two top blokes too - sad to see Andy walking with a stick now but he's a lot better than he was a few months ago. It's also brilliant to see them both still with a big interest in the Clarets.

A great photo Tony, thanks for this. Two of the best strikers to ever grace Turf Moor, how many other clubs have such supportive ex-players?

Wonderful to see these two heroes of mine - used to just love Willie Irvine especially. And me and Mr Bruce just in the background there......

Brucey - I noticed you two in the background straightaway, but didn't say so as I thought you might prefer to remain unidentified. ;)

Have been shown round the ground on match day by both of them, I agree lovely gentlemen, great ambassadors for the club and both very funny.

Probably still got more movement in them than some of our other partnerships...

In my first ever Burnley game I saw Willie Irvine score a hat-trick away at Spurs in the FA Cup back in March I think it was in 1966

First ever Burnley match also at WHL - a 1-0 victory courtesy of our legendary Scottish striker.

Polar opposites: 2 amazing footballers (still with an interest in the Clarets after all these years) - Dimitri Payet (no interest in playing for his current club).

Lockhead was before my time, but my Grandad told me all about him. Would've loved to have him seen put the likes of Payet into Row Z of the Bob Lord Stand.

Great to see them both looking so well. I always enjoyed a bit of banter with them when they were involved with the corporate and the match day tours.

I went to Ewood once to watch Rovers v Aston Villa, heinous crime I know but I went to watch Andy Lochead play for Villa one more time. 1967 was my first Clarets team and Andy was awesome then, helped by some other greats of that era.
Good to see two Claret legends looking well.

A few years ago I found myself on a flight back from holiday and ex-City goalkeeper, Joe Corrigan was there. A genuinely nice bloke prepared to chat about football and when I told him which team I supported he just said, with a wry smile, " you'd remember Lochhead then". Enough said.

Once heard Brian Labone asked who was the hardest player he'd ever placed. He said something like: My job was to kick the centre forward at the first opportunity. Some went crying to the ref, others went missing and you'd beaten them. Some gave you a game. Then there was Lochhead at Burnley - he would come and kick you back twice as ******* hard, twice as ******* often.

I told Andy once. He said: "Labone was a right soft ****."
