Former Blackburn Rovers `star` David Goodwillie ordered to pay 100k pounds damages for alleged rape. Criminal charges were dropped. Strange story this one.

They have not been found guilty - this was a civil rather than a criminal case. In the criminal court the standard for a guilty verdict is 'beyond reasonable doubt' while in civil matters the court makes a finding on the 'balance of probabilities' i.e. the civil court needs to be only 51% sure rather than 99.9%.
Hence the court awarded damages for the rape without being in a position to convict them of it.
OJ Simpson went through a similar process having been found not guilty of murder, was nevertheless found to have killed his wife and ordered to pay damages for it.

We have exactly the same system, with the same distinctions between Civil and Criminal, in England and Wales.
