The Bridge Bier Huis Pub - Burnley

I thought that I would try a pint in the Bridge before the Sunderland game only to find it closed again because they were having "toilet maintenance work" carried out.

The pub was in complete darkness.

Is this another local going down the loo?

If they're refurbing the toilets i doubt it's struggling.

They had signs up at the weekend also saying they were going to be closed. I don't think they usually open on a Tuesday unless it's a home game.

If The Bridge is struggling then all the other landlords in Burnley might as well write it off as a bad job.

*I very much doubt it's struggling.

Why is it that good?

What sets it a art from the other pubs in and around town?
Not a dig just curious.

Macca, for me it's the brilliant selection of beers, both British & from around the world. Cheese & salami too.

That, and it's a lovely old building with great character.

Oh, and you can get a pint of Moorhouses for two quid.

Admittedly I don't go in as much as I used to but a few years ago I'd be down there every Friday or Saturday night (or both) and it was always far busier than any other pub I'd visit in Burnley, sometimes to the point where there'd be 20-30 people stood drinking outside. Things might have changed recently but I've always thought of it as being one of the more successful/profitable pubs in town with a lot of regular customers, the beer isn't cheap either!

Edit: ChrisG beat me to it as to what makes it a good pub!

I've not been in for some time, must be around a year, but it is an outstanding pub because of its fantastic selection of beers.

Cheers for the feed back. Went in once when I was a lot younger but only for 1 and it wasn't really suited to a group of young uns.

Didn't have sports or anything on. But it was a while back, possibly a decade or so ago.

I'll put it on my to do list.

It's 2 quid a pint or 2.50 for an excellent guest beer. Cutsy says "snob pub". Bloody hell , where does he drink then?

It's a place I've grown fonder of as time has passed. I'd rather have a sit down and socialise with mates nowadays rather than be somewhere rowdy and loud so I don't mind the Bridge.

I tend to go for either Erdinger or Dortmunder which are around £3.40 but I know what you mean, there are cheaper alternatives available.

Very popular. I remember it being so busy once with Bolton fans that the Burnley fans were trying to get in via the windows.

I can relate to that, and it's possibly somewhere I'd appreciate more now, than maybe I would when I was younger, when the sole aim was to get tanked up as quickly and as cheaply as possible.

We used to go in at the start of a night to throw a few Erdingers down our necks and it was definitely a good way to get tanked up

You have to sample the obligatory cherry lager in there though. Pricey but so good.

The only struggle in the Bridge is getting to the bar on matchdays; it's so packed!

Good atmosphere pre match in the Prinny Royal and Turf pub.

Bars in both places gets a bit crowded, but good craic in there.

I like the Bridge. Great beer, really good value and a friendly feel to it. Real mix of people in it, but they don't seem to attract the knob heads.

Not sure why cutsy123 doesn't like. Maybe he is one of the aforementioned.

I do really like the Bridge, I just wish they would play a little background music. Nothing loud or confronting that would change the dynamics of the place but just a little hint in the background would make the atmosphere more enjoyable for me. It's only a little thing and personal choice of course but apart from that it's a great little pub!

I like the Bridge, Moorhouses £2 a pint, great bar staff. And Simon the landlord is a Claret fan home & away when he can get away

Let's hope the toilet refurbishments mean a move of the electro hand dryer away from next to the urinal and to the right of the mirror, on the way out.

It's an excellent real ale pub with a huge choice of beers at a whole range of prices. Ironically, I tend to avoid it on match days as it's so popular and very crowded and takes a while to get served. (I'm glad to hear the toilets are being altered because they weren't great)

The best boozer in town by a country mile. Great choice of ale/ very reasonably priced/ friendly crowd/ idiot free, and a 10 minute walk to the Turf - what more do you want ?

Fair do's.

Seems a bit strange though that they decide to close their pub on a night when the footy club are at home and have over 12,000 people in town who may want a pint. As did many Sunderland fans.

They had repairs booked in before they knew there was going to be a replay.

Jesus. Getting criticised for not opening and refurbing on a Tuesday night in January. Obviously it was a unplanned replay, and they will have planned the work for a notoriously quiet time.
