Re: Sign Jay now
They still need squad depth. Long, JayRod and Redmond out of position their only options up top.
If we signed a striker I doubt we'd loan out Vokes.

Money isn't a problem, scoring goals which Jay would do for us is paramount in this league,if we wanna stay in this league why not splash the cash.ClaretAndJew wrote:With what? He'd easily command £20 million.

We've already got someone who scores goals.

I'm going to upset some on here... Not sure he would give us anything that we don't have.
His years away have not necessarily covered him in glory !
There, said it.
I like Jay Rod but, we don't need him... especially at inflated wages.

Re: Sign Jay now
I don't see the same player that I saw before he was injured 3 years ago. He didn't look great last night.
I'd much prefer to see Defoe who guarantees goals but as has already been said it's not goals we're short of. Wingers, Full backs, Midfield first. it's not as though we're struggling if we don't sign in this window though is it?

Who're Southampton signing then?
Re: Sign Jay now
Would be a classy addition and a welcome homecoming.
Re: Sign Jay now
When (not if) we're more established a distinct possibility maybe .Still too soon I reckon.

When someone is unlucky with injuries for three years without a break, I start to doubt whether he'll ever be fit.Steve1956 wrote:He's been unlucky with injuries, would love to see him paired with Gray.
I would have liked to see him in the League Cup semi last night, but I only watched the second half, and he'd already been subbed. Injured.

20,000,000? A drop in the bucket. We're getting 200,000,000 from Sky this year, and have spent next to nothing of it.

Well known fact. All prem teams getting 200,000,000 from Sky this year. It's called television rights. Do you think they get to telecast and sell advertising time for free?

Re: Sign Jay now
How can a striker who averages 5 goals a season be worth 20m ffs. And that average is mainly thanks to one good season in 5!
Too expensive. Too injury prone. Not the player we expected him to be.

Re: Sign Jay now
Not to **** off our most ardent posters but if Rodriguez wasn't from Burnley town we'd not even be discussing this. We'd be calling him a crocked player with dodgy legs with a strike rate of 1 in 4.

Re: Sign Jay now
I would say that a fully fit and injury free Jay Rodriguez would he exactly what we and probably at least half of the current Premier league would need and want.
He is quality and to say we need better than him is laughable.

But hes never fully fit and injury free.
If we were to take a rarely fit ex burnley current southampton forward it should be austin. Neither are going to happen. But at least Austin would bag every other game if we got him.

But who is available? That's the point. And at that money. Don't think you'd get Austin at that price IF (and that's a big IF), he was available.

We got Gray because he was playing at a lesser club who desperately needed the funds in order to build a new stadium. Even then 9,000,000 was more than other teams were willing to pay for him.

We should get 4 Charlie Austins, maybe 5 at £20 million. He's out injured, yet again. Shame, because he does know how to score a goal or two.ontario claret wrote:But who is available? But who knows for sure, Paul? You can speculate, and players DO recover from injury, and some actually play better after coming back from injury.

If you aren't being paid to post on here then it's time that you were. You want to be having a word with someone.
The hours and effort that you've put into being a controversial bellend on here is quite remarkable.
Only ClaretTony and Dibraidio have put more work into this site than you have.

I don't see it as controversial to suggest a player who has averaged around 4 goals a season for the past 5 years is crap.

He's scored 25 goals in 94 league games for Southampton, 34 in 114 for all comps... Consider the fact he was also used as a left winger for many games aswell, not a bad return reallyKRBFC wrote:How many league goals has he scored since he left Burnley 5 years ago?

Re: Sign Jay now
And the fact he's been out for over a season and half with serious injuries. He probably would have been on the plane to Brazil with England before that ACL injury. Class player and would definitely improve our forward line.

Re: Sign Jay now
I don't think anybody is seriously suggesting Jay is crap or not a good player (I don't think KRBFC believes half of what he writes). Jay Rodriguez was excellent in the 2013-14 season and has unfortunately been plagued by injuries since. That doesn't make him crap, that makes him injury prone. I still think he's a good football player but would I sign him? Probably not. His injury record suggests it would be a waste of a wage and possibly hefty transfer fee.
Edit - Here are a few players who are/were rather unjury prone. Are they/were they all crap?
Jack Wilshere
Nemanja Vidic
Arjen Robben
Sergio Aguero
Robin Van Persie
I can go on and on
Point is, just because someone is injury prone, doesn't make them a bad player.

We need to sign them both. Then get the medical team to synchronise their injuries so they're never both injured at the same time, and we're sorted - play the fit one.

Re: Sign Jay now
Jay had huge potential, and before the serious injuries continued to develop, thought he might become a prolific striker with his all round game but hasn't really managed that.
Austin always was a wonderful poacher of goals, just one thing on his mind, although being a very different player with a very different approach and skill set Gray has some similarities he does know where the net is and hits the ball with venom.
