Same as CE, not seen the first one but I remember hearing in the Uni days that it was good, so fancied watching T2 - the question is, is it recommended to watch T1 before watching T2? Or would it not matter?

Even without T2 I'd say to watch Trainspotting, but I'd think you'll need to know some back story

I'd watch the first one - you get to know the 4 main characters then as T2 revisits them all years later.
Seen first one a few times - great film / great soundtrack
Gonna watch T2 next week

Absolutely critical to watch Trainspotting before considering the sequel.
The story picks up twenty years after the events of the original, and the motivations of certain characters such as Begbie will be totally lost on anybody who hasn't seen the original. It is well worth it also, quite easily one of the finest British movies ever made.
On the subject of T2, it is very good and is actually surprisingly emotional/reflective over the large time gap between the films. It is undeniably funny in places, as the original was, but is also thought provoking and melancholy. The characters are true to what they were originally and it is far better than the book it is semi-based upon (Irvine Welsh's sequel in book form was called 'Porno', and was released many years ago - and was pretty terrible).

Haven't seen the first one.
I recorded it the other day, but deleted it because it just doesn't appeal to me, it never has done.

I watched it tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. 8/10
I didn't see the original and although that fact didn't spoil my enjoyment I still think it would be better to have watched the original first and then the sequel.

Me too, not seen T1, yet.
What were we all doing when T1 was "the big film?"

Back from the screening, not a fan. Didn't like it. Too much nostalgia borrowing too much from the original for me. 5/10

What?
I also can't believe some have not actually seen the 1st???
It's a classic British film almost constantly viewable and repeated on film 4 over the years since it was made.
Watch Trainspotting.
Understand and "Get it's conclusions", having absorbed the characters and why the first ended (as brilliantly) as it did.
Then... Watch again / or read the book.
Then tackle "T2" - You pick up what 20 years has done to these characters.
"Too much nostalgia borrowing too much from the original for me. 5/10" is indeed CLAPTRAP

Hunter, its not a great. Don't be fooled by the way its packaged. The film is a mess, with crowbarred in old characters, very weak new characters. A dull plot. Scenes that as stand alone are on the face of it good, nice but offer nothing to the arc of the film. Which is ok in drips. But this was most scenes.
Trainspotting is one of my favourite films, I know it word for word. Its brilliant. But I thought watching some scenes in T2 was like watching a Comic Relief sketch. Lots of nice scenes, behind the creative filmmaking visuals, soundtrack and editing most scenes and characters are almost pointless...
Now this isn't entirely Boyles fault. Its Sony's. Sony make bad, bad movies. And there are decisions that you can tell they made, not Boyle.
A wasted opportunity to make a brilliant follow up. Instead it was just an appreciation of the first with no new ideas.

Great film. Went last nite
Good remixing of the original music and great bits reminicing about the original 20 years back
Highly recommend
Begbie is one on his own!

Personally thought it was better than the first.
Had a bit of a Guy Ritchie film feel about it for me.

We had a rare child free last night so took the opportunity of heading out to see it. Enjoyed it very much, good follow on from the first film and Robert Carlyle plays the psychopath Begbie superbly.

I've just been discussing it with a few mates and we're trying to sort it when we're all free to go and watch it. I've taken the advice onboard though and will watch 1 first.

I saw it on Friday night and was pleasantly surprised, as there have been so many sequels that have been dreadful. It didn't have the in your face shock factor/cult element of the first one but I didn't think it would ever be able to replicate that and they would have been foolish to have tried. That said, Danny Boyle did a good job of adapting the second book to catch up with the plot twenty years later and bring the story to a conclusion. So overall, not in the same bracket as the original but definitely worth a watch. Also, if you haven't read the book I'd definitely recommend, one of the best I've ever picked up.

No, but I did go Trainspotting this weekend at Burnley Barracks station. Sat on the platform for hours. It was rubbish!

Saw it last night and agree with a lot of what CTU says but I enjoyed it more. I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10. Nostalgia is the word (or Bird).
UTC!

As most follow ups not as good as original, however still enjoyed it and would give it 8/10.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it entirely justified the making of a sequel. In fact, it made the first film better in a sense. Definitely watch the original first.
