I'd no idea he had reached that age - very sad news, as said, an outstanding actor.

Great actor and also a great protector and voice for wildlife; the world will be worse off for his loss.

Rest in peace

Many great roles noted above. Always like his performance in Watership Down. Added an extra layer of melancholy to the film with his voice

My favourite roles by him were as Joseph Merrick in The Elephant Man and as Timothy Evans in 10 Rillington Place (favourite line "Christie done it")

RIP Sir John.

Great actor, legend.

Wasn't he the one who went on 'Who do you think you are" expecting his Irish ancestry to be explored.....

RIP

Quality actor who appeared in many films, tv roles, plays and always seemed different each time. Was even brilliant as Dr. Who for a short while.

Great actor, of course, but one of Hurts hidden treasures was that clear distinctive voice of his.

He did quite a lot of audio books, I'd recommend them with John Hurt as narrator as he just had a brilliant enthusiastic manner which keeps you interested.

Hugely talented actor who'll surely receive countless tributes for the career he had.
