There was probably nothing else to do other than go to the football or have ten kids

terrible, truly bad football, if you owned some boots, surely any bugger could get a game.

I'm still blaming that camera man in 1957 for making the players look bad! Some decent football in that Hamburg match.

That 1957 film v Man U was by Sam Hanna. He was the woodwork teacher at Burnley Grammar School and was a massive cine film enthusiast.

How right you are. Mind, we knew nowt better in those days. After coming up from't Pit, having a soak in't tin bath in't front o't fire and then tekkin whippets out we'd put 't flat cap on and wrap oursels in't muffler and walk down't cobbles to t' Turf. And then what did we have to watch? Cloggers like McDonald, Adamson, Jimmy Mac and Connelly, clumsily trying to control a casey with heavy toe-capped boots on bad pitches facing up against a bunch of other cloggers like Matthews, Finney, Duncan Edwards, Raymond Kopa and Uwe Seeler.
You young lads were indeed fortunate to miss rubbish like that.

A ball that moves like its filled with lead doesn't help. What were they like when they were wet?

They were like heavy Xmas puddings. Jimmy Mac admitted he used to avoid heading the ball after getting terrible headaches after heading the ball as a youth.

Based on that footage, how do you think the present day clarets would manage against that old team?

I suppose it's difficult, if not impossible, comparing different eras. The difference is not in the level of skill of individual players but in the fitness, equipment (boots and football) and state of the pitches. Nowadays players are much fitter (even to the extent of their diet) and the pitches are like bowling greens. Infamously, pitches like the Baseball Ground literally did not have a blade of grass on it by the New Year.

the camera was pitch side which makes it look crapper than it is. Also the pitch is very poor and bobbly. they do seem to be running slowly though.

Duncan Edwards was playing in midfield - not long before munich - he was according to Bob Charlton the best ever - but looks a clogger in this clip

yes, the pitches were shocking, but its very difficult to look at that old clip and say the football was impressive.

Where did the away fans sit/stand in those days? Bee Hole End celebrated Man U goal with their rattles

Also funny to see the 'physio' run on with a tea towel for an injured player.

Wherever they wanted to stand is the answer. There was no segregation then.

Burnley 1-3 Manchester United
April 1957
Attendance: 37,823

United won the title that season. I'm told United always brought lots of fans, although you couldn't quite tell back in those days as they just mixed in?

We were taught a lesson in football by Utd in that game. So many of that team perished a few months later.
