A crucial late goal for the Germans is what gave them the chance in the return leg and then put us out by one goal away, again late on.

Remarkable to think the next game would have been a Semi Final against Barcelona!!! Hamburg drew that on aggregate but went out in a replay. That would have been something. Barcelona at The Turf against THAT Burnley team in a Semi Final.

My dad went to the games against Stuttgart and Napoli I think later in the 60s. Got the programs.

My Dad said he was on that match,then a few days later he was doing his national service.

Saw the 2nd Hamburg match live on black and white TV when I came home from school I think, a very disappointing outcome, we should never have lost that one.

We played really well in the first leg at the Turf and Mac was pretty much unplayable that night. With a 3-1 lead we should have had enough to see us through to a semi-final against Barcelona but poor tactics in the second leg in Hamburg cost us big time.

No chance of me being allowed to go to the second leg but there was an empty desk at school that day and we soon realised that the lad had travelled overland to Germany with his dad for the match. That lad was a certain Ashington46!

It was a good game at the Turf. We played well against a very good side. I too remember rushing home from school to watch the match on the telly. Odd that it was shown live. Remember Jimmy Mac hitting the post near the end.

Looking back I think there were mitigating circumstances for our poor showing in the second leg in Germany. There was an eight week gap from the first leg at the Turf and when the game was eventually played late in March we were pretty much knackered from a season where we played over 60 games.

The previous Saturday Potts put out the reserves to play Chelsea in a league game which we drew 4-4 and the Saturday after we played Tottenham in the semi-final of the FA Cup which we lost at Villa Park.

Even then we were still in the League Cup but also went out at the semi-final stage in that competition. I think we finished 4th in the league that year.

oh okay, thanks. I got chatting to three chaps there, one called Roy who'd been to the 62 cup final and probably the Hamburg match too.

My dad said that I was too small to go on the Hamberg game due to the expected crowd even thugh I normally went on games with him then.

I went on all 4 home games in the Fairs Cup, with Napoli being the explosive one.

Just a question was it because of floodlights or the lack of them why the match in Hamburg kick of a 3 midweek
And was the first leg the same time kick off

Did Gordon Harris score all four of our goals in that game?

No, mate, it was Lochhead (2) and Harris (2).

Harris scored our only goal at Hamburg and it was a screamer.

Not wanting to move away from the op but the footage of the FA Cup game in 1963 at Spurs is cracking especially Adam Blacklaw's reaction to being kicked and an attempted punch at about 1m 40secs, think on another day Dyson may have got a pasting.

That cold January day in London was probably my proudest day ever being a Claret.

We'd lost to Tottenham two seasons previously in the FA Cup semi-final and then the next season in the Final itself. Both defeats the team accepted with dignity and humility but when we came to play them some nine months later in the 3rd Round smashing them 3-0 at WHL they couldn't hack it and showed a complete lack of class. Dyson was one of many of their players that lost it that day and they were fortunate that Blacklaw was in a good mood as a result of us playing them off the park.

There's a video at the side of the match, showing abandoned grounds. Quite poignant some of them, Vetch Field, Plough Lane, McCain Stadium. Glad Turf Moor not going anywhere. Only complaint about video, no shots of Ewood

Not a bad season overall for a then 9 year old schoolboy but with nothing tangible to show for it. So many memories dredged up in this thread. Being 'live' on telly in the afternoon in midweek from another country. Mc hitting a 'square post' near the end. Two years later,shivering through the coldest winter I can remember and two of the best teams in the country meeting in the FA Cup(when it meant something) again on a midweek afternoon and no way of finding out what was happening. A marked contrast between the state of our pitch compared to the one in Germany for the 2nd leg. 4-4 V Chelsea who managed to gain the draw with 2 late goals against effectively our reserve team. Can still see where I was stood with my dad for that one between Bee Hole End and Longside. Those were the days!

It wouldn't have been as amazing then as it would seem now to be facing Barcelona.... after all we were chosen for the opening of the New Camp
