Best FA Cup Tie You've Seen Us In

I know we've played some massive cup games in our time, and I was wondering recently whether any of our very own message board members had been at, for example, the '62 Final? I love the FA Cup in general, and it would fascinating to hear of any old anecdotes from games gone by.

How many of us were on that huge terrace in the 1974 semi, or the Final against Spurs?

The worse was Watford for me :|

The worse for my dad was 74 Semi final. His 21st birthday too! :(

Not been too many highlights these last 50 years ! Some ignominious exits though :D Oxford, Wimbledon, Blackpool, Telford ! We were usually out of the thing before the carol singers were round :D

2-2 vs Derby was a good one.
In the years before we battered them on a regular basis.

In recent years, a cracking tie against then Premier League Fulham at the Turf. After a cracking draw down at Loftus Rd, we brought them back to the Turf and beat them 3:0 in the replay. I traveled all the way up from Penzance to see it too. Great match.

I wasn't really old enough to fully function my brain tactically but even I know the team selection was a joke.

Derby away in 99/00.

Liverpool when Traore scored his comedy og.

Micah Hyde at Ewood is probably the best FA Cup goal I've seen. Shame it counted for nothing.

Spurs 1 Burnley 4 The league Cup early 80's 1-0 down at ht, a storming 2nd half with 2 Billy Hamilton goals and 2 OGs from Graham Roberts. All this while struggling near the bottom of div 1 as it was then.

Edit: Scrub all that, it's the fa cup not the league cup

Villa and Wrexham were good, on the build up to the semis.
Long side really rocked for those games.
Away at Spurs, 4-1. ;)

Still loved that game at the Baseball ground though.
We lost but, it didn't matter.
Our fans were jaw droppingly good that day.

Yep. This was a good one. Some good ones v Spurs and Villa around the same time but think they may have been league cup?

Dont have many good FA Cup memories. Sheffield United is my earliest FA Cup memory so although we ended up going out probably that. Was typical Burnley that. Had everything. Excitement. Built me up then knocked me down and about 7k other clarets! Freezing too.

Spurs 4 Burnley 3. Burnley 2-0 up in the first 4 minutes 2 for Willie Irvine, Spurs got 2 goals back but Willie completed his hat-trick 2-3.

They equalised and then Gilzean I think got the winner, end to end stuff all the way and probably the best game I've ever seen.

Obviously not the best but a 3-3 draw at home to Blackburn in the 6th round in 1960. 3-0 up with 17 mins. left, a very dodgy penalty awarded against us and then panic seemed to set in.
4th round at home to Leyton Orient in 1962 on a Tuesday night after a postponement. They scored a breakaway goal with just over half an hour left and we then laid siege on their goal with an onslaught I don't ever recall being repeated by us anytime since. 'Bomber' Harris got the equaliser and we needed a 1-0 win in a replay at Brisbane Rd. in front of over 30,000 spectators. Everton at home then Sheff Utd away followed, both memorable with the game V Everton being the one with many Everton fans sat on the roof of the Longside for a better view. Photographs are available that clearly show this.

That's where they were playing their home games at the time. Moved out of Craven Cottage with intention of building a new stadium. Craven Cottage was not being renovate at all at the time. The new stadium plan fell through so they built a couple of new stands at Craven Cottage and went back.

My first FA Cup tie was the 3rd round in 1961 when we beat Bournemouth 1-0 - I won't mention the worst but it came 13 years later and has already been mentioned.

Best
61/62 - 5th round v Everton home - won 3-1
61/62 - Final v Spurs - lost 3-1
65/66 - 3rd round replace v Bournemouth - won 7-0
84/85 - 1st round v Penrith away - won 9-0 (not really, but the scoreline says I must include it)
99/00 -3rd round v Derby away - won 1-0
02/03 - 5th round replay v Fulham home - won 3-0

Not many really good games to be honest and, final apart, I've gone for games only when we've won. Had to include Wembley simply because I can at least say I was there when we played in an FA Cup Final.

I followed the match on radio in the absence of Television for the 1962 match . Spurs scored the first goal and Burnley equalised through Robson . We lost by 3-1 .
I read A REPORT IN Mirror .After the defeat the town of Burnley was as if deserted and all restauraNTS CLOSED .

All my favourite/most memorable cup ties are against Derby County. The 2-2 draw at the Turf (Eli's header - Wow!), the subsequent replays, and the 0-1 Andy Cooke headed winner.

Great days. Burnley, Derby County and the FA Cup. We've been a bit of a thorn in their side ever since really, haven't we?

The atmosphere against Bolton in 1987 when they beat us with a late penalty was very good. We averaged 6,000 that season, but had 10,000 on against a fellow 4th division side.

That Bolton game held the record for most arrests at a game anywhere in the country that season - it was certainly a fizzer

a replay at Stockport sticks in my mind. Threadbare team - forced to play Joe Jakub as sweeper which proved a masterstroke.
Brendan o camel scored a worldie and rocket rons socks did a tidy finish to win 2-1.
Even tony Hancock played well for more than 1/2 an hour

Surprised you described the atmosphere as very good, it was so bad that day that special measures were put in place for the league game against them a week later. I always remember the teams being led out for the league game by Tommy Cummings and Nat Lofthouse to try and calm things down. David Reeves made his debut, and scored, in the league game which we won 2-1.

Yes, there's not too many to pick from in the FA Cup, more near misses than glory.

I'll have to go for beating Stoke in 1990. It was only the 2nd round but played midweek for some reason, cracking atmosphere and a 2-0 win. Lost to Man City next round.

9-0. Yes, I enjoyed that but it didn't have the excitement of the Spurs 4 Burnley 3 of 1966.

I was talking about the noise for a fan enjoying their first full season, not the violence and players lining up in front of the fans the following week for the league game.

It was my second season, I remember it well. My dad took us in the Bob Lord for a change, he must have a had an inkling about what was to happen.

I spent 85 minutes watching objects flying across the Longside, then we left early and drove away just as it all kicked off outside. To be honest, it didn't seem that big a deal at the time, even as a kid. It would be front page news now.

That Rochdale game was brilliant to watch loads of goals, sendings off, a penalty and the best punch up seen on the turf by me.

That's the one but four days earlier Mark Monington had been sent off in the 1st round replay at York. Suspensions weren't immediate then so he was allowed to play against Rochdale. I'm sure it's the only time I've seen a Burnley player sent off twice in four days.

That postponed Orient game should have been my first time on, Silky. Took another 2 months.
We had a similar siege against Orient in the 80s. 24 corners, I don't think the ball was ever in our half but we couldn't beat John Jackson. 0-0. (Not fa cup)
I've never had good memories of the FA Cup. Semi and SheffWed replay spring to mind but I'll put up Wrexham just for the crowd that day.

I was working briefly as a steward during the Rochdale 4-1 cup game and it all kicked off around my area, so to speak. Monnington was proper fired up, it was a bit unnerving at the time. Ironically John Deary was excellent as a forceful peacemaker during that incident, it could have been worse.

Another memory is the 0-1 at Bury when the ball hit the underside of the bar and bounced down and the liner flaged and gave a goal, despite no real claims from the Bury players.

I could be wrong but did he also get sent off in a reserve game with a week or so, and ended up getting a suspension of around 10 matches??

Occasionally we used to take our two children out for tea on a Friday as a treat for them working hard at school. We went to the same small cafe in Helmshore and one time our son was wearing his Burnley shirt. The owner of the cafe noticed this and told us that tomorrow(the following day) his son would be playing against us in the FA Cup for Penrith. Can't remember his name but he did tell us he was the goalkeeper. Just kept quiet the next time we went in.
