New York City

Post by Foshiznik » Fri Feb 17, 2017 1:27 pm

After one hell of a bad year last year, I have decided to fulfill my dream and go to New York City for 10 days next saturday (25th). Never been before, but have booked seats at a NY Knicks basketball game and a table at Keen's Chophouse. I have bought a New York explorer 10 pass.`

I know many people on here would have been here before, so any advice on places to see in particular? I plan on going to most of the tourist stuff, but any that stand out to you or are completely off the tourist trail?

Any help is appreciated! TIA

Hi, a tour of the USS Intrepid was pretty good, central park was great, do the empire state building as early in the AM as poss & use the info earpiece that points out the buildings & history of New York.

I know a few people who've been and rooftop bars seem quite popular in the evening.

Funnily enough I'll be out there from the 6th of next month.
There's a lot to see and do but I'd definitely recommend doing the Rockefeller centre and the Empire State Building observatories. Day and night if you can. Is your Explorer 10 pass covering tourist attractions like a CityPass would?

Things to consider, to name a few.

- Empire State Building
- Rockefeller Center / Freedom Tower (New WTC building)
- 9/11 Memorial Museum
- Natural History Museum
- Brooklyn Bridge
- Guggenheim Museum
- Intrepid Air & Space Museum
- Yankees Stadium
- Metlife Stadium (This is out in New Jersey - about an hours' train out of Penn Station)
- UN Building
- Grand Central Terminal
- Central Park
- Times Square

Go to the Empire State late afternoon. It's quieter then. You also see it in the daytime and dusk.

The Natural history museum is great and I'm no museum geek.
Trip to Statue of Liberty and states island are good
We went to yankee stadium to watch the Yankees, but don't think it's baseball season yet
Take a trip for some food at Ellen's stardust diner, you can't book just turn up there is always a queue to get in but you don't wait long.the Staff are all wannabe musical stars and atmosphere is great.
Top of the rock is good,as is Empire State Building,my tip is do one at day and one at night the views are pretty much the same otherwise.
Also get a train over to Brooklyn and then walk back over Brooklyn bridge try and do it aroun sunset,it's good.
Have a great time,I wasn't keen on going but was persuaded by the wife, and it's well worth the trip.
We went to Washington it's only a few hrs on the train and spent two days there and I enjoyed that as much as New York.

The 9/11 museum and pay 20$ extra for an hour guided tour- possibly the best thing we did.

Probably too late for the crown visit but statue of Liberty boat trip to both islands is good. The second Island where the immigrants were assessed is good if you like history.

The red tour buses that go up uptown/downtown hop on buses are quite interesting. We enjoyed the uptown which went past the expensive pads to the rough areas.

Walk around canal street and little Italy.

The highline and the areas such as Chelsea market where you can get off it. Bits of artwork and place to chill depending on the weather.

Night cruise/party boat with or without food. Expensive but good.

Central Park on foot, horse carriage or bike (or all three!).

Walk around inside grand central station.

Fifth avenue to look at the shops, outlets an hour away to actually buy stuff!

Absolutely endless amount of activities- great city.

Rooftop bar 230 in 5th.

If you don't mind the price a drink in the Marriott marquis spinning roof bar Times Square.

Mcdougal street and surrounding areas for drinking- similar to Northern Quarter Manchester.

If you are near the Bull/stock exchange there's a pedestrians street with bars and restaurants called Stone street near Hanover square which is ok.

Take your passport if you want a drink at a sports event.

Top of the rocks a must but I was a little disappointed at the view of the Chrysler building

I went up the Empire state at night too. Wasn't really worth the wait imo although some people loved it.

By biggest advice is to just get a Subway pass and get off at random stops and just wander around. You get a sense at the real new york.

Top of the Rock, don´t spend your money going to the viewing platform, miss the queue ( it´s long bugger) and go straight to the bar, same view more or less.

Getting around. Use the Citi bike system, you have 30 mins to get round then park it, (beer/wine) 5 mins later get another and continue. We used them for 8 days all over Manhattan and in all weather it was perfect, even the taxi drivers were polite.

Another vote to Ellen's Stardust Diner, been there on both occasions I've visited New York and it's great, talented people just looking for their break.

Football factory bar across the road from the Empire State is good, downstairs in the basement bar is just full of scarves, signed shirts etc.. didn't spot any Burnley memorabilia so make sure you take something in for them to hang up!

The 9/11 muesuem is outstanding, and I agree with the other poster who said pay the extra $20 for the guided tour - it's worth it.

I would also recommend just walking around some of the neighbourhoods. Greenwich Village, Hells Kitchen and Brooklyn Heights were some of the ones I visited and were all interesting in their own ways.

First thing I did and what I would highly recommend is get the first metro / tube you can to brooklyn, come out of the subway and walk back to Manhattan over The Brooklyn Bridge. Its surreal and the view is something else. Just like the movies. It is the first view we had of New York proper and was amazing.

Go to Little Italy.

Go to Grimaldis Pizzeria - you wont regret it if you like Pizza! Again you can feel the New York 'vibe'.

I dont usually do the guided bus tours but did in New York and it was great. If you get a good tour guide its well worth it.

As pointed out above just get the tube to random places and get off. We did that.

Go to Soho, Chelsea, etc

Get the Staten Island Ferry.

Visit all of the Boroughs / Districts.

It is all great. When I went I didnt appreciate it as much as I do now a few years later. I wasnt as blown away as I expected with some of the stuff. I had gone there from Vegas and should have done the two separately as I was still in Vegas in my head.

Roof top bars.

Central Park.

You'll be there for the Hull and Swansea games, head to http://www.nevadasmiths.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to watch all the Prem games.

The bus tour things are great, hop on and off for the entire day and do the loops first and then decide where you might want to visit later.

I loved the pizzas at John's. http://www.johnsbrickovenpizza.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Baseball is in Spring Training and all the practice games are in Florida. First home game is April 10th.

I'll follow this thread with interest as we're going to NYC for our honeymoon in July :) Always wanted to go.

Would love to see the Knicks play but going in July makes that impossible! Let me know how you find the experience :)

I never had an urge to go but then got the opportunity with work and I'm so glad because without that I doubt I'd have booked to go myself.

It is an amazing place.

On our final night we ate at the 360 rotating restaurant in Times Square. Bit of glamour. Great food. Tad pricey - will be at least £100 per head I reckon but it was a real treat.

I've been looking to fly out again - feel like I missed parts because I was working -and I've been surprised at how cheap flights are. Under £400 return.

Have to take KRBFC's word for that- I didn't have the energy for hookers with all the different areas to visit in a day :o

Agree on the Brooklyn bridge, walk back from Brooklyn to lower Manhattan.

Tube to Lower Manhattan and walk from ports right back to Times Square.

Broadway shows are a worth a visit.

I think HelloHiGoodbye got off lightly at £100 pp

Reading with interest as I'm in Nyc at the moment. Recommend getting the PATH from World Trade Centre to Exchange Square, it's one stop. Outstanding views of Manhatttan and if you walk a little way up Montgomery St there's City Diner where an excellent breakfast and bottomless coffee will set you back a mere $15.

Would also agree with a stroll across Brooklyn bridge being a must. As previously mentioned, whilst doing this have a wander around Brooklyn Heights, completely different from Manhttan and whilst there make your way to the promenade for great views of the Manhattan skyline.

New York is a great vibrant city you'll love just wandering around.

Use the underground to go places. Great experience and something a lot of people don't think of doing.

If you're a fan of Cake Boss take the ferry to Hoboken and visit Carlo's Bakery.

Take the ferry to Ellis Island and visit the immigration station. Fascinating insight into New York's cosmopolitan history.
