New Order vs Joy Division.

I've passed all my music tastes on to my children. Which has resulted in them not entertaining rubbish music.
However, my son asked me, which is the better band, Joy Division or New Order?
For me there is no question, it's Joy Division.

David Potts(Potsy) from the band Monaco used to work for me at Barclays Swinton. He left the bank to join 'Revenge'with Peter Hook and later formed 'Monaco'with Peter. They had a couple of top twenty singles but David and Peter fell out. They are back friends again now and David has played with New Order but is I think playing in America or has been.

New Order
Saying that "Love will tear us apart" is better than any New Order track

David Potts never played with New Order. He is playing with Peter Hook's band the Light and there is a rumour Monaco will reform.

Don't think he was ever part of New Order but played just as a guest backing guitarist. He also tried out with Oasis but nothing came of it.

Probably "No Love Lost" for Joy Division and "Ceremony" for New Order, but it depends on my mood.
"24 hours" is great if I'm in the mood for a sing-a-long and on days when I'm spaced, "I remember nothing".

Joy Division had a much bigger impact on other bands' music.
The remaining members continued to improve their ability to play and compose...
However for me the thing that sets them aside is the emotion in Joy Division, Ian's voice is iconic and his lyrics are thought provoking.

I appreciate that, but it's a question asked by a young man in his formative years.
These questions have a bearing on how we move on in life as men

I enjoy Shadowplay, and Atmosphere - depending on the atmosphere.
LWTUA was, is, and will remain one of the greatest songs (and tunes) ever written.
Admittedly it's no "Bob Todd", but classic all the same.

Joy Division brought new sounds and styles, albeit it with a huge pinch of 'experimental' which for me often ended up in more of a noise than great music, with the obvious exception of 'Love will tear us apart'.
There were some good lyrics but in truth, Ian Curtis wasn't much of a singer.
New Order effectively picked up from Joy Division at a time when electronic music was really grabbing hold.
Both bands were of their time and certainly influenced many sounds and styles. With a preference for a 'dancier' sound, I'd opt for New Order who for me produced more quality music.

To be fair DCW , Joy Division / New Order didn't have a "proper " vocalist between them.

Not sure what "proper" is.
Ian was an emotional singer. I was never sure how much his "off tune" was part of the sound he wanted.
When your themes are largely around discordant emotions it is not quite right to be singing sweetly.

I have to go along with Digital for Joy Division, so good I've had some of the lyrics tattooed!
I never thought I'd say this but I can't stop listening to Singularity from the 2015 Music Complete album. I heard it first at last summers Glastonbury (on TV). I think it's as good as some of the fantastic 80s New Order tracks. But to be fair I would say both bands are probably my favourite bands of all time. I personally think some of the music is timeless, to think some is approaching 40 years old is amazing. ****! perhaps I'm older than I think I am.

Haven't seen a mention of Dead Souls yet. I'd also add She's Lost Control (prefer the 'Peel Sessions' version to Unknown Pleasures) and Interzone - to the quality tracks already mentioned above.
New Order - Ceremony and In A Lonely Place, honourable mention for Hellbent.
Ian Curtis' lyrical genius gives JD the edge as far as I'm concerned but both bands top class

Warsaw were best.....
Seriously, it's like comparing fish with snooker tables. Saw Joy Division supporting the Buzzcocks and they were superb. Likewise New Orders Power Corruption & Lies is equally superb. Different for all their same parts. Like the Buzzcocks vs Magazine.
