Long throw in specialist.

Leicester had something like 20 opportunities last night for Fuchs to deliver very long throws into the liverpool goal area.
Caused Liverpool lots of problems and more accurate at times than a corner kick.
Would it be an advantage for us to develop or sign a long throw specialist?

Even just a short throw in player would do !!

Rarely seen a team worse than us at squandering them. Throw ins can be quite advantageous depending where they are given, Burnley seem to disregard them comletely.

A Burnley player successfully throws the ball into play at least 99% of the time.

But lets not let facts get in the way of daft comments.

Yes Macca but how long does it take Lowton to throw when players are not looking for the ball..
.We lose an advantage if we dont take them quicker.just gives the opposition time to man mark.

I was pulling your leg.

Was saving the resident I'm right, you're wrong poster some time coming on telling you your opinion doesn't count, as you are not a qualified premier league manager.

Why would you want to try and inprove us at the moment? Everything's going great so pipe down!

See the Burnley v Sunderland - Premiere League cup latest for details, you will most probably not be surprised.

Its too early in the morning Macca for me but i get what you are saying ha ha.
When you have watched football at all levels for dare i say it 55 years you do get a bit of an idea how the game should be played .Any way opinions are good .we all have them...some are sound some are not....but i think we all have Burnley football clubs best interests at heart and want them to do well.
It is the people who knock everyone and everything on here that gets me annoyed .

Stoke stayed up because of a long throw. Now they are an established premiere league side with some very good players, playing some wonderful football at times, no one actually cares what football they played 5 seasons ago to get where they are now. The aim was purely to stay in the league, which they used any means to do so, no matter how ugly it was. I'm sure all the other teams fans and pundits got on their backs beating their style down, but not one will mention that now, it is just known as a place that teams can't just turn up and expect to win.

I'm all for exploiting every avenue possible in the search of something that will even gain us as little as 1 extra point a season.

I think the manager strongly believes, the more you get that ball in the box in a variety of ways, it will cause the opposition most problems.
He regularly speaks of finding different ways of winning and a mixture of football.

Not sure of many players around who are as good as Delap was.

Leicester have a long throw like you mentioned, but other than Cardiff, I can't think of any other team who use it like a corner.

Not long throw related but I've seen some foreign teams deliberately send a guy up near the goal line, not in the goalmouth. As you can't be offside from a throw in this fella can't be ignored. Advantage can be gained from this situation but it needs work on the training ground as everyone would have to be alive to the opportunity.

Managers come and go but one thing remains constant: the absolute requirement for Burnley players to stand around like statues at throw ins.

I agree, I have said it for quite a while now that our throw in "routines", such as they are, are
very poor indeed.

Corners are nowt to shout about either if truth be known.

But hey, the rest of their game is spot on so they can be forgiven.

According to a fellow poster these are the stats.

In the first 19 games we scored 4 goals from set pieces plus two penalties.
In the last 7 matches we have scored 5 goals from set pieces plus 2 penalties.

I think the arrival of Barton and Brady have seen the delivery improve dramatically.

Not surprising, as our first half of the season efforts were shocking, we may as well kicked it out for a goal kick than actually take the corner.

Our set pieces last year were pretty effective, with Taylor, Barton, and Jones on the case. All three got goals directly from free kicks and were responsible for loads of assists. Taylor in particular seemed the be a secret weapon for us at times, coming on late on to put quality balls in from set pieces late on in games.
Defeats to Brighton away and Middlesbrough at home were avoided through these. Two results that were crucial in us clinching the Championship.

There was a young lad who came through our youth team when Stan was still manager (I think) who had a pretty long throw. Was it Matt O'Neill?

Ian Hutchinson (Chelsea) circa 1970

great long throw specialist...after releasing the ball his arms continued circling several times :)

'...Hutchinson was a striker noted for his impressive heading ability and for taking long throw-ins. On his debut against Ipswich Town, he sent in a series of long throws which reached the opposite side of the penalty area, confusing both the opposing defenders and the crowd and one of which an Ipswich defender inadvertently put into his own net...'

sadly died 2002 aged 54

I seem to remember Wales have a long throw routine with Bale throwing to Vokes that has worked well.

It really is a no brainer.I dont know why more teams dont do it.Almost as good as a free kick or corner at times.

You still see players trying to time a run for a throw in to beat the offside.. happens nearly every game, even at the top level. Must be a hard habit to shake off. Maybe not for Andre though.

Fun fact, no team has had an assist from a throw-in this season.

If we can buy Crouch and Llorente then the long throw would genuinely be a good idea.

The long thrown sort of got frowned upon as a Pulis tactic

I'm surprised SD doesn't make more of this - he's often on about small marginal improvements and this would get the ball in the box far more often. In fact any tactics involving our thrown-ins would be an improvement

Weve always been awful at them. So much so that I even hated getting them in sunday league as i naturally / subconciously assumed it put us under pressure.

Remember him having massive ears .... And a really weird ducks waddle like running motion

Last I saw of him, he was playing for Nelson FC a year or so back.

Adrian Serioux black fella who played for Millwall. Now he could throw a ball.

I remember a game at Turf Moor about 2004/5 he got it into our 6 yard box from the half way line.

IMO we have always been poor for throw in's but the memory is definitely fading and of course have not seen the majority of our matches, however based on what I have seen, it is a rare occurrence we turn a through in to an advantage and often the other team steal and get quickly up the filed or in to our box.

It is certainly one thing that can be improved but if SD thinks it's of no advantage then ............................ But I might say when he was out of earshot "he's wrong"

The long throw is especially effective if its going in to opposition box, as they know it's dangerous and tend to load up for it, so even if they get it (most of the time) they don't have a great outlet. Think the Bale/Vokes example was very good, wish we had that in our locker to use.
