I know there are a few people on here that follow all these things and wondered if anybody could give me a crash course to whats in Vault 7?

Seems like it's just a catchy title for another large batch of meant to be confidential US Intelligence documents.

I saw the rumours of all the supposed contents, just wondered what it related to once released.

A lot of trojans, malware, etc to enable computer/phone hacking and eavesdropping is a large part of it I hear.

Does that mean the CIA will also be following Magic Numbers now?

Basically the CIA have been able to crash your car since 2014.

I've had a quick read and it just confirms what the tin foil hat brigade have been saying for years.
The governments are capable of hacking most things and even contemplated hacking modern cars (they probably can by now though).

I remember the head of Mi6 it think it was who used an old style Nokia because it couldn't be, or was harder too, hack as it didn't have internet on it etc.
Smart technology always has 'back doors' in its software for the manufacturer's to use, so professional hackers wouldn't have any problems getting into things either.

All we need now is confirmation that the vapour trails from aircraft are actually population controlling drugs being sprayed into the atmosphere and the tin foil hat brigade will wander around being all smug.

They can hack into cameras on smartphones, baby monitors, tablet PC's, smart TVs, web cams, CCTV etc etc.
Not only can they log your internet usage, they can film you whilst you're 'surfing'.

Well they won't be able to film me while I am surfing, as I never take a camera with me.

Sadly I don't think it comes as much of a surprise to anyone that the CIA has these sort of capabilities but what is more than a little disconcerting is not only the scope that they have but how systematic and widespread it is, it is business as usual, the norm, everyday operations. And I don't think that it is too much of a stretch to make the assumption that our own intelligence agencies are doing exactly the same, GCHQ, Mi5, Mi6 etc. Especially seeing as Mi5 helped develop the Spyware that enables the CIA to spy on you from your own TV.

One of the most alarming parts of the leak is part where it says the CIA has 'lost control' of the cyber weapons arsenal. Meaning that their exploits, weaponised malware and spyware that they use to exploit phones, computers etc., that they have spent billions of dollars developing, have fallen into the hands of other foreign countries and and organisations.

That's the real concern with things like the Snooper's Charter that Theresa May has been so keen on pushing through. If it's a targeted attempt by a state actor then, realistically, there's probably little you can do to protect yourself.

If ISPs are just hoovering up and storing all this data though then, given the failings in the past (Talk Talk for instance), it seems inevitable that this data will at some point be compromised.

Wasn't there a "spy" film not long ago where they would use every persons camera on tier phone to track a person.

My dads always said that whatever tech is shown in a film as some amazing bit of kit is never too far from what is actually capable.
