The four most famous people from Burnley

One of these free magazines dropped through my letterbox today and it had a feature listing the top four people from Burnley. I wonder how many of you agree and how many would offer alternatives.

The four were

1. Owen Coyle
2. Brian Laws
3. Sir Ian McKellan
4. Fabian Coulthard

Thought Coyle would be in the bottom 3 being honest.

I wouldn't have expected him to be that high

I would put Coyle as the most infamous. Neither he nor Brian are from Burnley whilst Sir Ian and Fabian were born in Burnley but moved on pretty quickly.

I wouldn't expect to see him in the list at all, given that he isn't from Burnley.

1. Claret Tony
2. Rocky
3. Bertie Bee
4. Adam Kay

Very strange list all round. Two people seriously disliked for different reasons and two others who were out of Burnley very early in their lives.

If they're saying Owen Coyle and Brian Laws qualify, why not Gazza or Ian Wright?

Harry Palmer character of Len Deightons Ipcress File. Not a real person but was from Burnley in the stories.

Well of those four only the bottom two are actually 'from' Burnley by virtue of birth, though both moved away in early childhood. I was a bit disappointed the other week watching Ian Mckellen on Who Do You Think You Are, where he mentioned he was born only in 'north Lancashire' ~ so he obviously doesn't hold his town of birth in much high regard! His family moved away with him to Wigan when he was 6 months old and I don't think they had any remaining family ties here, so fair enough I suppose.

My vote would go to Jimmy Anderson ~ Burnley born and raised, and a Claret - no contest!

A strange list.

Ian Mckellen
Jimmy Anderson
Paul Abbott
Rachel Brown (or Sophie Hitchon if it's an Olympic year)

Sure Jimmy is an Arsenal fan.

Few of his family members had season tickets near me a good few years back though.

As it is International Women's Day I would nominate Sophie Hitchon.

Apart from anything else, Anderson and McKellern are clearly much more famous than Coyle.

Anyway, if Coyle counts, perhaps Eden Hazard counts? He was in Burnley the other week.

Ian McKellen
Bobby Elliott
Tony Livesey
Shahib Malik

up and coming star of TV? Christian Fraser - BBC News reporter. He's a confirmed Claret and 'represents' Burnley in a very positive light.

We were in the pub in Longton on the way to the West Ham game and got speaking to a couple of the locals. They asked me who was famous that came from Burnley and apart from Ian McKellen I struggled to name anyone else. But to be fair I had had a fair few beers by then!

Considering that Jimmy Anderson is Englands leading wicket taker of all time and has spent long periods as world number one Id suggest he beats anybody for fame barring Sir Ian although he doesn't particularly associate himself with Burnley unfortunately.

For its size, surprising how many actors come from Burnley and the surrounding areas. Off the top of my head, Lee Ingleby (Inspector George Gently, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Street, Life on Mars, Early Doors) is probably the most successful - albeit not mega, mega famous. I wouldn't class Sir Ian McKellen as a Burnley boy because he doesn't himself.

Also - John Simm, if we're including the slightly wider Burnley area. Went to Edge End although he moved around quite a bit as a kid, similarly to McKellen.

Jimmy has got more press for Burnley than anyone else bar our football club. Everytime he goes out to bat he gets called the Burnley Lara or bowling the Burnley express on sky with worldwide audiences.
His family are all ST holders in the lower longside and Jimmy definitely jumped up cheering when Burnley scored against Arsenal in the Kev McDonald game.

Ron Greenwood was born in Worsthorne and I'm sure I read somewhere he played on turf for a worsthorne side.

A bit earlier than Albert was Peter Kippax. Played for Burnley at Cricket and Football as an amateur. Played in 1947 Cup Final as an amateur and also played for Gt Britain Olympic football team in 1948 Olympics.. Pretty amazing that he did all that for nothing when you look at the mercenaries today who call them selves sportsmen !!

All these celebrities and high profile names but a word of thought all these people are merely passing ships !
The real famous and most prestige people that should be well up their and no one should come near are those people, and lets face it a lot of us would not be typing and watch the dizzy heights that we find our self's in to watching our player pit their wits against the top players in the world.
Are the hero's of Burnley that lost their lives in the 2nd world War fighting for our cause.
For that I salute the real famous people of Burnley not some tin pot celebrity UTC
