Sending off for stuff

I was thinking this morning about when as a kid, you'd 'send off' for something from a newspaper, comic or advert. Generally that kind of shopping was pretty crap, but these days online ordering is all the rage - though imagine if Amazon said 'Please allow 28 days for delivery'.

I remember wasting the first couple of hours of my 1985 Easter holiday waiting for a delivery of 'Jet Set Willy 2' which I'd inexplicably sent off for using the publishers advert magazine coupon. Every morning I was convinced today was the day and I'd sit in the window watching for the postie to appear on our road and then usually frustratingly walk straight past. Then, the process would be repeated when the second lunchtime postie appeared (remember them?)

So, what have you 'sent off' for back in the glory days of waiting 28 days for delivery.

I remember ordering some goalkeeper gloves from an advert in Match magazine, possibly from Sportsshoes Unlimited in Bradford. Bit daft if it was from there, as my dad worked about 100 yards from their shop.

I also remember sending off for some wraparound sunglasses because I wanted to look like Bret Hitman Hart. They came in one of the cylinders for camera film, and were coiled up in the same way.

Waiting for my Dennis the Menace fan club pack which I'd sent off for, from my Beano comics.

Weetabix tokens for Thunderbirds toys in the early 90's.

World Cup 98 goodies. I sent off for a mini football after collecting tokens off Frijj milkshakes. It didn't arrive until long after the football finished :(

About '68 from the Mirror.
A black military jacket with red collar and brass buttons. When it turned up it was so cheap I never wore it. Haven't bought anything from a paper since but I do use Amazon, the returns are much easier.

My missus wants to know if "Jet Set Willy 2" comes with batteries.

I usually sent off for stamps with the ad usually carrying the mysterious words (well, to me at the time) "on approval"....

Plus I once bought a mountain bike for £30 quid out of the back of a Sunday paper. Went up the steep hill out of sabden and bits literally pinged off'of it

These ads kept me spellbound in the 60s. I was gobsmacked by ads for sea horses, x ray specs, a book on how to throw your voice, with the illustration showing someone looking at a chest as you mysteriously stood nearby, and I always wanted a screen that fit over the tv that turned it from black and white to colour.

I used to send for stamps and applied to join the National Pets Club in the Mirror. I gave my 5 shillings to the lad round the corner, who told me he was the local agent. I asked him every day for about 2 years if my membership had arrived until the despicable truth hit me. I still hate him.

Struggling finding info for it online but there was a deal with Coca Cola, I think, for a mini football or t shirt or CD or coat or something, maybe for USA 94' or Euro 96', collect the golden ringpulls, could've been red though, I forget. Anyway, they were like gold dust at the time in Burnley, you'd see loads of Coke cans in shop fridges with the ringpulls missing. Remember at school most folk had the football, a few more industries types collected enough for the shirt and CD and the one or two real wheeler dealers of the school pimped enough ringpulls for the Coca Cola coat. Sad times.

A company in Nelson (Handling Solutions) used to be responsible for sending out a lot of the promotional gifts. I worked there for about a month when home from Uni one summer.....it was 'enlightening' to say the least and at that moment I decided that I needed to make something of myself because I didn't want to spend any more time there!

Tee-shirts from Viz. Rude Kid, Gnat West Bank, the Pathetic Sharks. The shirts were always of the poorest quality imaginable, and were usually ruined after a couple of washes.
