I'm looking to buy a car from somewhere around the Burnley area. The only things I'm really looking for are reliability and it must have 5 doors. My budget is around the £1000 mark.

I was wondering whether any of you could point me in the direction of a good car dealership?

You need a friend who knows a bit about cars at that budget level.
I'd go Toyota on that budget. Engines are rock solid - unless abused?
Fords are cheap and parts easy. But at that £1k level you get more car with Toyota.
Stay away from old Citroens.

A £1K car is always a punt - With 5 doors at this price sometimes older is better. More car.

For £1k you can pick up something pretty decent.

5 doors - something like a mondeo or a golf for example, which size/shape you after?
Mk4 golfs are reasonably priced, but you may also be able to get hold of a mk5, they appeared around 2004 I think it was.
Mondeo's are pretty solid, worth keeping an eye out for Passats/A4's too.
You can pick up a Renault Laguna for a decent price.

Avoid a Citroen/Peugeot and/or Ford that's got a 1.6hdi (diesel) engine, they're literally the worst engine ever made by the Citroen/Peugeot group and you'll have no end of trouble with them.
The other engines are solid enough, just the 1.6 diesel is gash.

Toyota is a good shout, same with Hondas.

You don't necessarily need to go to a dealer of some sort, unless you're hoping for some sort of warranty?
For £1k, I wouldn't expect much tbh.

A private purchase/seller might be a better option.

If you're after a diesel, it's worth checking the new tax/emissions rules/costs coming in, plus in the news there are going to be charges in certain cities for using a diesel, just a heads up for that one, but of course that last part is entirely dependent on your usage.

VW Passats are a great shout - bullit proof and they are not fancied so to speak. A solid choice...
but VW part's can be high £

Log on to Autotrader and you csn get an idea of what is available. You can search for whatever you want. eg Distance from your postcode, max/min price,number of doors, auto/manual, petrol/diesel. Then do a bit of research on any model you find. Would suggest if your max price is 1000 you look at up to maybe 1500 and make offers. Good luck

Toyota Yaris with as few miles on the clock a possible. Make sure it's got full service history.

Can prob get an 05 shape with that budget. Don't get the freetronic model.

I got a Yaris with 14k on the clock in Jan 2013 (2012 reg). It's now got 90k on the clock and still going strong. No problems with it whatsoever. It also has a brilliant media player as standard. £10k from Motorpoint.

Don't bother with an Audi or a BMW, the indicator lights don't work...

But on the plus side you get a private reg and look well rich... all for a grand!

You could probably get a 04 or 05 plate with between 50k and 80k miles on clock

It will be good for another few years and many miles (150k easy).

Upkeep on tyres and parts very low.

Insurance low.

Plenty of 2 and 4 door versions about.

You could do worse than looking at Rover 75's. The reason I say this is that a friend of mine purchased one quite cheaply the other day with lowish mileage and immaculate full leather interior and sound bodywork. Also not a car you would associate with boy racers and generally very well kept.I was very impressed and they get a good write up in various motor trade magazines.

Don't know how good or trustworthy they are as dealers as I 've never actually bought from them but we were looking around Sandygate Cars in Burnley (near The Range) recently and seem to recall they had a few cars in within your budget.

They have a website as well.

We also looked around 'Budget Cars' in Brierfield but although the cars were quite cheap I think there was a reason for that!

As mentioned by another poster Autotrader is a good starting point, Just be wary of sellers that advertise themselves as 'dealers' but don't actually have a trading address or website just a mobile number.

Wait until he needs to replace parts like suspension arms, they're not cheap and parts will gradually become more expensive over time.

I buy and sell a lot of cars but the more sporty type.For £1000 it is unlikely to be that reliable and you could easily spend that again in bills.
Avoid chryslers - the ugliest range of cars in the road.Nissan Joke - the ugliest car on the road but then that's why it's cheap.

Don't buy a VW. The electrics were awful during the early 2000s. Unless it's a Phaeton, then it's worth it to feel like a king with a Lambo engine!

However, you won't get a roadworthy Phaeton for 1g.

Nissan Micra's are very reliable and plenty of space inside including headroom.
