When I first went on Claretsmad before ClaretTony I presume. There was two boards. One where all the abuse in the world was acceptable and another toned down.

It was because of that result (and a few others that season) that the forum was named as The Throw One Inn.

I joined Clarets Mad around October 2002, so it was around the time of the Grimsby game, but it was amich smaller group than it is now. It had been going before I joined though. Was very popular even back then. Is it still going?

It certainly was, and continued with that name until it was renamed Eli's in December 2006. It came from Stan's comment that we would throw one in every few games. We definitely did that season.

Remember on the old one a few years ago someone somehow managed to locate all the old threads from certain dates. Would be interesting to see the take on some early performances.

Remember the fuss about the liverpool cup game is it on is it off.

We let in at least 3 no less than 13 times, 6 twice and 7 twice. Without totalling all of them up thats 65. Thats 21 goals more, in just 17 championship games than we have conceded in twice as many premier league games this season. That is pathetic.

How was it that bad FFS.

89 goals we let in total.

89 and then another 77 in the following season. But even in the previous season, when were top at Christmas, we conceded 62 goals.

That's 228 goals in three seasons.

I joined around early on (2000) and was posting from earlier, and there werent that many on t'internet so the madness of a defeat etc now wasnt there. I used to discuss stuff with a guy (horse botherer) called USABlue.Obviously the clarets on the board were much as they are now and tempers rose a lot but it was far slower (for replies) and more readable as a whole if you catch my drift.

to be honest, as an avid claret, i was initially told about it from a mate,it was all great, i was banished occsaionally by the anonymous humourless mods, but couldnt keep away. Nowadays,i have taught myself restraint. great messageboard though. If you love your club, what better way of getting things out there? it is a passionate thing we do.
In addition, when i recently questioned a lost thread, I was given an answer in rapid time. That impressed me immensely.

Claret Flag was the other one around at that time. Just descended into petty arguing...which is when Clarets Mad took over as the better site. Which then descended into petty arguing...

I joined ClaretsMad around 2005 when I was 15, racked up a couple of thousand posts before getting a life and vanishing, before reappearing when this board was born. Still view it more or less every day though.

I was about 15/16 and was the "top poster" on CM for a while and then I decided Sat nights were better spent inserting my bits into female orifice'.

CM and getting into "conversation" resulted in making new friends and acquaintances for me Ashingtonclaret, Redbeard Green Parrot,Leedsdave, Claret Tony to name a few; Chris, a good friend who doesn't post anymore, but we still meet up regularly.
CM became progressively poorer and lead up to the nascent UTC

Charming.

What happened to CM and all the other "mad " sites are they still going?can you still interact on other clubs forums from this site?

Before CM and CT there was some weird e-group with Prof Moriarty... Are there any others on here that have come on the same journey?

CM is still going although 90% of the the usual posters put in a transfer request and moved to UTC.

A few of the other clubs mad sites were busy (Carlisle/WHU) but some teams sites i popped onto visit before we played them hadn't had any activity for years.

Back in the heyday of FootyMad the accessibility of rival boards due to them all being on the same network was a really good feature, and made it easier to have banter with other teams, whereas now you have to create a new account for each forum more or less. Still, the loss of that is a small price to pay for not having those insufferable ads ruining the viewing experience.

Was that the Yahoo group? I remember that in the 90s.

The Clarets Email group. CT was a part of that, as was I. We were only weird in the sense that we were devoted to a crap football team and carrots

The footymad sites used to be okay, but as others have said there are some teams that have literally no activity. I seem to remember that we were always one of the better messageboards (thanks to Tony). I used to use Clarets Mad for a long time, but there was no question about moving over to this one after what happened to it. In all honesty I think I would have made the transition just based on all the regular posters who moved over here. Strange as it sounds but after reading people's views on us for 10 years plus you really start to feel you know them.

Here's a story to scare the youngsters.

Back in the mid-1990s, when email was a new invention, and there was very little footie on TV (and we were very poor, so on TV very, very rarely) one of the earliest email lists for clarets would organise for a video cassette of one of these rare games to be sent around the group. One person at a time, over several weeks.

And it would arrive in a Jiffy bag, you'd watch the match (from a few weeks ago) and send it onwards.

Young folk might need to ask their parents about some of the technical terms here.

Absolutely and it's how I come to meet DiBradio so without that there would not have been an Up the Clarets.

I remember the website with the Prof. It was a good site. It didn't have a messageboard though. It had a chat room. That's was circa 1999-2000

There was also the "Claret and Blue Discussion Board" around the 2000-2002 era which I think was run by 'Claret&BlueHero' and had a smallish but good fun group of posters such as AlfUckem and Clitheroe Claret and myself. I started using Clarets Mad when it halted.

T'was quite a large group of Clarets fans who, as well as nattering about all things BFC in a not too serious way, had a good craic discussing totally irrelevant nonsense, a memorable one being the ' When is a teacake a teacake?' debate which went on for weeks. Still not sure whether Ovenbottoms, Barmcakes and Baps are or not.( Oh no!, Don't start that again on here - Ed
Can't remember a single personal insult or any nastiness although we did have a Saxo type interloper called Rod who regularly got a bit of good natured stick.

I heard the Prof passed away several years ago but not sure about that.

I loved that e mail group. I'm on Facebook with a few of that crowd Jo and Rob Slade. We had a meet up via a executive box at a game and it was good to put faces to names. The Prof was a very funny guy in a few ways but good value for money. Not everyone's cup of tea but I liked him.
My favourite story was when the club were in dire straits financially. One of the group suggested that those that could afford it put £1000 apiece in a fund to give to the club. About 6 people tentatively said they might consider pitching in. Most said no chance but within days The Express had the headline along the lines of Clarets E Mail Group propose Takeover!! It was even more of a non story than Shackleton but clearly an Express reporter was a sleeper within the group. Happy Times when we were shoite!!

A Quick Guide For Young'uns

"the mid-1990s" - A dark period of history before Little Mix, Justin Beiber or Harry Styles. People like Clive Middlemass roamed the earth spreading mayhem. Jamie Hoyland was classed as a "dependable" centre back and would fetch pies for hungry Clarets fans. The Championship was called "Division One" and was full of teams who could tonk us including: Tranmere, Southend, Crewe, Port Vale and sometimes Cambridge United.

"very little footie on TV" - To stand the best chance of seeing a goal you had to actually attend a game in the olden days. Even that was no guarantee if somebody tall stood in front of you. Elton Welsby showed the goals once on TV and it was illegal to repeat them.

"email lists" - Names written on a pad of paper. This was achieved by the archaic technique known as "writing". A human hand would carefully guide a pen loaded with ink over a piece of paper until it formed legible letters and words.

"video cassette" - A rudimentary device used to capture early moving pornographic images. A "video cassette" was the size of 6 iphones taped together and held one billionth of the information in grainy, unwatchable footage.

"rare games" - Games that included any of the following: The Clarets winning away from home. Lee Howey making a successful clearance. Mark Winstanley successfully not falling over for 90 minutes. Mark Monnington not getting sent off. Aidy Randall or Kurt Nogan not looking p*ssed. Marco Gentile.

"Jiffy bag" - a bag robust and cushioned enough so that it could safely transport a "video cassette" (see above)
