A few fans on here have said he would be a good signing. He wouldn't IMO. We have 3 strikers who struggle to score as it is. We don't need another. Always flatters to deceive for me and then once in a while produces a great performance with goals.

Maybe they think that because we already have 3 of his international teammates that he'll fit straight in & already have that understanding.

For me Long is one of those players that seems to have his run of good games then you don't hear anything of him

A useful player but not for me. We need someone that's going to be more clinical (as yesterday showed). Someone with pace would be nice, especially if it's someone that we can utilise out wide as well, but I don't see Long as the sort of player we need.

Just thinking of a striker, Negredo would be good but his wages would make it a no go and rightly so.

I'd like him. He has pace, can stretch play, link play and run the channels. With regular starts, which I believe he'd get, he'd bring goals and experience.

I think he'd be a decent option for us. This season many of his appearances have come from the bench.

I post less than three times a day, according to my profile. I think you need to look a bit harder.

Should be looking to do better, and younger, than Shane Long. How many players do we want from the same nothing international team ?

Must admit I don`t get it at all. ALWAYS flatters to deceive, in my eyes. No better than Martin Paterson in his prime. The way we play away from home, apart from in Merseyside, makes it hard for ANY striker to shine. We`d need a Quinn/Phillips kinda partnership.

Now as for Longy well pace is his number one thing that's for sure the only problem is that he is now getting older . Never going to be a 20 goals a season player but has a lot to offer , again as I have said before with other players he is a Dyche type of player who will give you everything .

Southampton paid Hull circa £14m for Long and he turned 30 this year

No value in paying that sort of money for anyone of that age

No sure you can describe Austin as a fringe striker. He was their main striker and top scorer until he got injured.

He's a forward who can retain possession of the football. That's a start. Better footballer than our current three strikers. That's another positive. Faster than vokes. That's a bonus. Doesn't give unnecessary free kicks away. That'd help in retaining possession. With a run of games, he'd be a much better option than anything we have already.

Long is mentioned because of these things, and the fact he would fit the very effective current framework. Plus it's a possible. It's realistic.

Or we could just forego the steady building programme and go and get Suarez and messi?

There's a few things in there that i don't recognise about Shane Long. I don't think he's necessarily a better footballer than Barnes or Vokes, or that he retains possession better. I'd regard him as a hard working, fairly robust and surprisingly quick player who lacks a bit of composure in key moments.

But as i say, he's not the worst player we could be linked with by any means.

Why do so many supporters want Shane Long..

1. He's better than what we've got. His record is poorer than he's ability deserves. Most of his appearances are from the bench

2. He's a realistic target, we won't be able to afford (or will refuse to pay the wages of) players like Austin, Negredo or other targets suggested.

3. He's a continuation of a strong Irish contigant that we've now got. It should lead to a sharper initgration to the group and results in a higher likelihood of him being retained in transfer windows.

He's a excellent player for me and he would be my number one realistic choice of striker in summer.

Id have him alongside a goalscorer. Offers more than goals.

What can possibly go wrong with buying a non-goalscoring striker that relies on pace and is 30 years old?

The reason a few fans like me suggested him as a potential target are articulated above.

It's also about realistic signings and players who fit the way we play under Dyche.

Very easy to sit there and pour through statistics saying who we should not sign....it's a bit more complex than that in the real world....rather than start a thread saying why you think we should not sign Long come up with some realistic suggestions yourself - and then the rest of us can tear it apart based on a quick look on Wykepedia !

Valencia are desperately trying to offload his wages and I don't think he's going to be able to demand silly wages if he's part of a relegated Boro team. He's a nuisance of a player, the type Dyche likes, but his footballing ability is well above Barnes. Negredo and Gray would be a seriously good front two. It won't happen I know, but it's the upgrade on Barnes that we need!

Of course he can demand silly wages given he's contracted to Valenica for a good while yet

He's contracted to a club that doesn't want him because they can't afford him. He'll have a decision to make this summer as there's not a hope in hell anyone will match 100k a week wages given his age and his goals return for Boro. As with many players, it'll come down to his desire to play the game versus the size of his bank balance!!

I doubt Austin would be considered fringe. if fit he'd play. Jay Rod hasn't played regular football now for three years.

I'm not convinced of Long although one of our travelling group considers him almost to be the best things since slided bread. He's bloody quick, that's for sure.

It's looking increasingly likely that Boro are down. Does this present an opportunity to go in for Patrick Bamford?
