Irrelevant where he's from, he's a season ticket holder at Altrincham with no affiliation to either Manchester club.

If we had concerned it should have been when he refereed the Altrincham v Burnley pre-season friendly last July. :D

Mike Dean is a Tranmere fan from the Wirral, but he can't ref Liverpool or Everton games. Strange that the rule doesn't apply to Taylor.

Not sure much can be read into the Manchester connection. I briefly worked there in the summer of 2009 and in the two months I was there. I only saw one Man Utd flag and two Man Utd shirts in and around the city. I worked there in 2008 for three months and didn't see any.
Still. You'd expect to see some, SOMEWHERE!

mike dean reffed the merseyside derby in december, although it was his first game involving either club for 10 years.

Strict rules on which clubs they can't referee but you are wrong with Dean. And Taylor has refereed Man U on many occasions. I don't see any problem with it at all.

Refs have to declare any allegiance - that for example prohibits Friend from refereeing Leicester games and Moss from refereeing Sunderland.

Maybe we'll get lucky next year and get a local ref from our end. One from Blackburn, perhaps.

I hadn't realised Dean refereed the derby in December, but Dean was initially given the FA Cup Final in 2006, but then removed as Liverpool were involved.

There must have been an active barring in place to mean that he didn't then ref either Liverpool or Everton (mainstays in the PL in that period) for 10 whole years.

yep, i thought that was odd.

must have been a change in the rules.

There's 24 other referees they could use. For Dean and now Taylor, why put them in the firing line from fans, managers and people they live near?

I'm sure if there was something riding on a match no referee within about 25 miles from either side would get the gig. ( the way it should always be IMO, whatever the game at this level )

I am sure his performance will be well scrutinized by UTC and its posters. Uniteds fourth penalty will probably give us a clue who he supports

So no then haha.

60/40's go in Man United favour usually, they'll probably get the 80-20's now. He likes a good guess does Taylor. He even has the cockey swagger and grin to go with it.

He came across very well on the ref program on Sky when he discussed Sam's handball and even showed his assessor report. I'm happy with him in many senses I just don't think he is the best ref. Much rather have Clattenberg at home and Taylor had our Everton game instead.

I'd be more worried about him if he was from London like most of their fans

I seem to recall Jose Mourinho got sand his vagina about him reffereeing the Manchester United -v- Liverpool game earlier this season? All seemed a little silly and he ended up getting charged by the FA didn't he?

My Mrs knows him as she used to work with him. He does have a season ticket at Altrincham but he is a bit of a Utd fan. Whether the Altrincham thing is a way to show he doesn't suppprt a Premiership team is up to everyone to have their own opinion about

Not too sure about it being irrelevant where he's from. Think the Portugese might be stalking the TV studios if he found out the referee was from Rawtenstall.

Six miles from Old Trafford is far, far to close to be a closet manure fan.
Rest easy.

Hope he winds up the 'miserable one' by the end of the game.

This post sounds very like the moaning and groaning we had a few years back, from I think Brighton, but don't quote me. They found out the ref was from Blackburn and thought he'd be biased in our favour.

I can't imagine much rivalry between mufc & altrincham it's a closer call us & the lot down the M65 there's been a closer gulf in terms of history size games played etc not really a comparison. It's a bad choice of referee IMO.
