...From the much maligned George Boyd on Saturday and each one hit the target.

I read somewhere that he also made the most tackles.

One swallow doesn't make a summer.
Boyd should be one of a few we replace for next year, as age and style of play will change.

Boyd often has played well away from home, especially against teams laden with pace.

Can't say I've seen him tackle. Seems to stand 2 metres away and try to block the ball. He certainly doesn't tackle like Marney or Mee.

Or the more important stat.
2 goals
1 assist
34 appearances this season

I'm fine with offering Boyd another contract but 2 years seems a bit much. We were right to not offer Barton 2 years and I'd trust the club in this situation as well.

Really hope we can sort a new deal for him. He can keep doing a job at this level for another couple of years I'm sure, and I'd rather that be for us than for someone else.

This wasn't the point I was making.
A 100% pass rate is pretty decent at any level whether it is done by George Boyd or whoever.

Let's compare shall we:
Brady - 11 appearances - 1 goal - 2 assist
Arfield - 28 appearances - 1 goal
Hendrick - 29 appearances - 2 goals - 2 assists
JBG - 17 appearances - 1 goal - 2 assists
Defour - 20 appearances - 1 goal - 3 assists
No one stands out. But Boyds minute per goal/assist is noticeably poor.
Boyd is a decent player however moving forward we need to improve on him

...and he was playing against the club he supports. If a Chelsea or Arsenal player had hit a pass like his to Gray on Saturday ,we'd never hear the end of it.

There was a period in the game at Palace where Burnley passed the ball all around the pitch, Palace got nowhere near. I didn't count how many - and think that 44 would be an overestimate - but, when I saw the subject title my first thought was "did someone count the pass sequence."
Lot's of great performances by Burnley team on Saturday. I was very pleased to be there. The Times this morning give George Boyd and Scott Arfield the highest ratings of the 4 in midfield.
I hope we can select from all the same players next season - but, know that Michael Keane will be moving on and maybe one or two others besides. They will all leave with by best wishes and thanks for what they've delivered for our team.
And, of course, I do want and expect some team strengthening in key positions in the summer.

So on that basis we can improve on virtually all of our midfielders which is bound to be the case until we sign Kante Pogba etc.
Also I am proud to say that I started one of the 'He's here he's there, he's etc.' on Saturday, did you join in and get behind the boys?

Purely as a matter of interest, N'Golo Kanté has a Premier League record of 70 appearances, 2 goals and 5 assists.
George Boyd has a Premier League record of 99 appearances, 9 goals and 5 assists.

What makes Boyd an attacking midfielder? If his primary task was to directly create and score goals he wouldn't start every game.

Boyd takes up one of the primary attacking roles in this team. People that suggest a winger isn't an attacking midfielder are deluded.
Kantes job is to sit in front of the back four and break up attacks.
Boyds job is help defensively but primarily to attack the opposition defence

N'Golo Kanté all time Premier League tackle success rate: 69%.
George Boyd all time Premier League tackle success rate: 72%.

I'd personally be quite surprised if our style of play changed much next season. Whether or not we manage to sign someone in the summer, I think Boyd will be a useful player to have in the squad.

If one of those 44, that instant outside-of-the-foot through ball into the path of Andre for the second goal, had been played by Dele Ali or Ross Barkley or anyone at Chelsea the pundits would have been purring endlessly about the quality. Stunning pass that was perfect for Andre to run onto and smash home.

Boyd plays on the wing. Is that not a creative attacking position.
I'm not a fan of Boyd at all. I think he is a serious weakness in our team. However I can understand what he adds to the team in terms of a defensive unit.
Different opinions I guess.

Lowton 95

Ward 67
Mee 47

According to this website
JBG has 4 assists from 11 appearances and 5 from 13 if you include the FA cup.
Defour has 4 assists and 2 goals from 19 appearances if you include the cup.
I would think some of their appearances came from the bench as well so both far more productive than Boyd for minutes played.
Agree Boyd is worth a contract as a squad player for his work rate and application but would be disappointed if he was starting regularly next season.

It's great that Boyd had a good game but he hasn't had a great season and looked to have lost a lot of confidence at times.
The cynical side of me thinks being a Palace fan and the need of a new contract has inspired him.
If he tried the assist pass every game instead of safely going back to the full back he would have far more support from the claret faithful.

Think it's more a case of people having different definitions of what a "Winger is".
"Wingers" are forwards not midfielders. Think Zaha and Townsend either side of a center forward in a 4-3-3. Expected to do very little defensively.

Depends on one's definition of a tackle.
He bends his legs around areas where no other leg can reach and steals the ball over and over again. He also puts his foot in as well.
Most valuable player.

Newcastleclaret93 wrote:Boyd takes up one of the primary attacking roles in this team. People that suggest a winger isn't an attacking midfielder are deluded.
I think someone is deluded as to the meaning of the word deluded. I think they also misunderstand Boyd's role in our team.
Boyd isn't a winger, at least in the traditional sense. He's a midfielder, and his role is invariably stop the opposition's right back, which in the modern game is a key attacking outlet.
A player's job is whatever the manager asks it to be in the system he asks the players to adopt, because there's more than one way to play the game. Dyche doesn't ask Boyd to habitually beat men and provide a steady stream of crosses. Dyche does ask Boyd to do a phenomenal amount of work to track players out of possession and then support the front men in possession. So its not one of the primary attacking roles in the team - in many respects it is a less creative or attacking role than the full back role (Lowton will have provided far more crosses and so far more assists this season because that is his job, not Boyd's).
That said, I'm surprised by that stat about Boyd from Saturday, if it is indeed true. I could have sworn Boyd gave the ball away a few times, and if he did produce 44 successful passes out of 44, then its an anomaly because for all Boyd's qualities, composure in possession is not always one of them and his pass completion record often leaves something to be desired.
