Has anyone decided to vote yes and if so, why?

Decided No. Not against the idea but Burnley is not a unitary authority and it is easier to list the things the new executive would not
be able to control than those he/she would. (As now) no control over education, NHS, police, fire brigade, social services and more. If
the whole of Lancashire can unify to the point of having one mayor with significant economic resource behind him/her then maybe.

Absolutely not !

The whole farce brought up by an absentee landlord, who's been convicted more than once for neglecting his properties !
The only point that has any merit in his argument, is his pointing out that the Council ward with one of the highest percentages of privately let properties ie: Daneshouse with Stoneyholme, was exempted from the licensing arrangement...
Under the Selective Licensing Arrangement, each property is to be inspected, with a fee of around £600, which allows it to be let for the next 3 ( maybe 5 years ) . Daneshouse with Stoneyholme was omitted from this scheme, as apparently " there was no demand for it amongst the tenants ", said a number of local " Community Leaders "...

It has to be considered because the 'bloke who doesn't like the landlord fees' managed to get enough signatures from residents of the borough on a petition to trigger a borough-wide referendum.

My suspicion is that many of the signatures on the petition are from people who didn't know what they were signing, or signed it because they believed they were being promised something that can't be delivered or achieved through having a directly elected Mayor.

All I've had is a badly edited leaflet that doesn't say who sponsored it giving largely irrelevant reasons to vote yes, and two leaflets off political parties saying we don't need an elected mayor. I haven't a clue of the benefits or otherwise so can only realistically vote no so as to keep the status quo.

I too am voting for the status quo as have no idea of the implications of doing otherwise.
I have seen not one piece of literature, or heard any discussion or promotional material
regarding the advantages /disadvantages of changing.

Is this not a joke? I've had zero information about why there's a referendum or what it's about, and it sounds like I'm not the only one, yet tomorrow we could have a new system of local government with some landlord from Bury who's got some problem with houses as the new mayor? And the only reason I know about it is because I've come on a football messageboard? ********. No.

On a related subject I voted this morning at about 8:30. Three pleasant ladies sat behind a desk. £160.00 minimum per person, I think the supervisor gets more. Looking at the list which they strike through when you have voted I think I may have been one of the very first voters they had seen. I don't have an obvious alternative but democracy is expensive.

Lets keep it as is is at present where it usually taken in turns of the longest serving councillor who hasn't been the mayor before.
I cannot see the point of paying an elected mayor £80000 a year.Councillors have a hard enough task running the town with all the severe
government cutbacks in grants to the council.Plus we could be lumbered with Birty as for four years.

We both voted yes.
We the people should decide who is elected and who is not.
That way we can vote them out.

Having seen how people do deals to get elected for these things I dont trust anyone but the people of Burnley to decide.

But you elect the councillors? Do you know what the Mayor does, as far as I am aware it's a ceremonial position and they represent the town at ribbon cutting ceremonies. That position doesn't have any political power. What do you think the new mayor will do and how will it fit with the existing system?
