Hull - Swansea relegation play-off

Post by aggi » Thu May 04, 2017 1:28 pm

It seems the following results (which are reasonably realistic) or permutations of them would lead to a play-off at a neutral ground as teams would be level on points, goal difference and goals scored.

wouldn't Hull get the nod? In their head-to-heads they're the better team. More interesting in the relegation battle for me is that after all Palace DO get dragged into it as both Hull and Swansea fight like hell to keep up. Palace have the tougher run-in

This isn't over yet by a long way

West Ham (With their free Stadium) or Palace (With their over-expensive players) relegated, would be nice! :P

It seems that head-to-head doesn't count for the premier league.

On paper, yes. But United couldn't beat Swansea at Old Trafford and Man City couldn't even beat Boro.

Palace have every chance of picking up 2-4 points from those 2 games, I think.

I think the 3rd bottom side should play a playoff with the winner of the playoffs to gain promotion. I believe they have a similar rule in Germany,

It's similar in Scotland with the bottom but one of their Premier League playing the winner of the playoffs. And if I remember correctly it started off like that in England as well.

if it was evenly matched after those results, swansea would be deemed losers by virtue of them being welsh.

Would love West Ham to get dragged into it and we relegate them on the final day of the season. I can't see them winning another game but at the same time can't see the points gap closing.

Not quite - it was a four team playoff like it is now, but with third bottom of the Premier joining third-fourth-fifth of the Champ. (Actually it may have been fourth bottom and second-third-fourth, because I think that was the year, or one of the years, when they were reducing the size of the Premier from 22 to 20.)

The Scottish system is poor and favours the SPL team.

A shorter season for the SPL team, anding with games against the lesser teams when the league is split in two. Bottom are relegated and second bottom go into a relegation playoff.

In the Scottish Championship 1st goes up automatically, then 4th plays 3rd over 2 legs, winner of the plays 2nd over two legs ( might just be at the 2nd placed teams venue) then the winner of that plays the SPL team who have had 2 weeks of rest. If you finish 4th you have so much more football to play.

I don't see anything wrong with this tbh. If you only finish 4th then it's not unreasonable that you have a tougher ride than the team finishing 2nd.
There's a big plus to this too, since it means that the "Huddersfield" scenario last week against Birmingham can't happen because it's far more important to finish at the top of the play-off places, and therefore avoid the extra games.
At present it's a bit of a lottery and the team finishing in 6th place in the Championship can perhaps be 15 points below 3rd.
