I've just put a few words together about Peter Noble on the site. It was difficult to write them to be honest, I wasn't expecting this news today which I've found really upsetting.

Never saw him play, but people clearly speak highly of him. He seems a genuinely nice fella from when I used to go to his stall on the market. RIP, Peter.

Thats just taken the shine off today, a bit like his bald head.
Never forget him hitting the bar with a header against Newcastle in the FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough Leppings Lane End. He was one of the smallest guys on the pitch that day, rose like a phoenix.
Spoke with him at his shop on the market many a time about it.
Rest in Peace

As you can see from my user name, Peter Noble was my hero. I thought he was fantastic and I am very upset st this news. At some point I would like to write a tribute. He would be my first choice Burnley player of all time.

Very sad to hear this news. Peter Noble was my first hero and as far as I was concerned he walked on water.
I remember being devastated when we let him go to Blackpool and I guess that was my first dose of realism in football.
I hope the club finds a fitting tribute. Great article which covers the story of a great servant of ours. The term legend is bandied around way too easily these days but in this instance for me it is right.
My thoughts go to the Noble family.
RIP Peter.

This news has totally ruined what was a wonderful day. A mans man who put his shift in and expected the same from others. Proper Burnley.
RIP Uwe and thanks for the memories.

Niece piece Tony, I remember the back page of the Telegraph, Dads paper, when we sold him to Blackpool, " How IgNoble " it said. Watching him in playing my minds eye, brings happy memories. RIP.

Very saddened by this news. Uwe is one of my all-time favourite Clarets, and scored what is possibly the best Burnley goal I have ever seen with a bullet diving header in a 4-1 win over Newcastle. Fitting tribute to a lovely man CT.

Saw Peter Noble many times in the mid and late seventies playing in the same team as Waldron, Flynn, James, Flynn, Stevenson and Ingham.
Noble was a midfield dynamo. He was everywhere on the pitch. His work rate and passion for playing for Burnley were unquestionable. He was a true role model for any young kid aspiring to play football at any level.
Fond memories of one of Burnleys finest.

It was Norwich and he'd scored a hat trick against Middlesbrough in the previous home game.

Great write up Tony.
We went to his Market stall on many occasions to buy my Son kits.
He always remembered us, and used to find it funny that coming from Wigan we supported Burnley.
Very Surreal for me talking to one of my Burnley heroes, yet he was so humble about the impact he had on my early years watching the Clarets

So sad, a true clarets legend. Etched in my claret's memory, his 4 goals in the 4-4 home draw with Norwich, his fabulous penalty record and the absolute gent he was in the shop in Burnley market.

Just logged on and was shocked and saddened to hear of Peter Noble's death.
I recall seeing him play in the mid seventies and he was one of the best.
Brought me back to earth somewhat on a day where we should be celebrating
and possibly still should do so in memory of Peter Noble alongside staying up.

Legend.....
Used to come in my dads shop....Norths Dry Cleaners.......him, Kindon, James, Waldron........etc......my dad sponsored the match ball, and in those days nothing like now, but during the week I went to get the ball, signed by BFC and Palace.....walked as a 13 year old to the ground, and Noble just came out of the club shop and gave me the Mitre Muliplex ball ............as a young lad, I was in awe
And around that time we played Barstewards and they came out in the second half and he gave one Kevin hird I think maybe 2 or 3 -1? Sign........and he scored a pen and we won .....in the days both clubs got on together......then yep his market stall, and still went in my dads shop........
Can u imagine similar now?.....
A real gent......so sad he's gone......thoughts with his family but they can be so proud of his impact on BFC.....in that "V" shirt...............

Very sad news. What a fantastic signing he proved to be. I don't know if the phrase " a good engine" was around when he played but it would have been an apt description of him. One of the best penalty takers and brilliant in the air. So many good memories of a great player.
RIP.

Great article and a fitting tribute Tony. I remember what a hero he was for you and indeed for all of us.
Saddest of news on such a good day for the club.
Loved this quote though
I once asked him why, as a Sunderland fan, he allowed himself to play for Newcastle. He explained that he was working as a painter and decorator while playing part time for Consett. Newcastle were the only club to make him an offer.
He said to me that had I been playing for Padiham and working as a painter and decorator and I got the chance to go and play top flight football for Blackburn, what would I do. I said: “I’d go and get some more paint and get back to work.”[/i][/b]

The story was in 1999 after Sunderland had won promotion to the Premier League and he said he couldn't wait for the Tyne/Wear derbies again. I dared to ask him who he'd want to win them and he indignantly said: Sunlan. I pointed out that he'd played for Newcastle and he explained the scenario. He looked almost bemused at my answer, Jenny burst out laughing. It shows the difference, I suppose, between a footballer and a football fan.
He was an ever present in the last Burnley team to survive a top flight season in 1974/75. As we walked round behind the Jimmy Mac Stand yesterday I don't know why but it was Peter Noble's picture I paused to look at.

So sad to hear this news. A true Claret legend and a gentleman. The iconic image of him in the classic Claret strip with the blue 'V' will live long in my memory. I, like many others, used to chat to him on his market stall, and it was obvious he had real affection for the town.
Condolences to his family and friends.
RIP Peter. We will always remember you.

Still shattered to read this news yesterday.
I'm sure we all have different memories of the great man so let's share a few.
1) Playing at FB, his first year, whilst Mick Doc recovered from his broken leg. Then going up front. Then becoming the midfield dynamo and never once looking out of position.
2) His two hat tricks in a week. Boro and Norwich if memory serves.
3) screaming at the bench to get Terry Cochrane off. A league cup tie against Wolves, very few on and you could hear every word. Cochrane had turned up in body but not spirit.
So many more but let's have yours.

Great player and a real gent. Going to buy a replica shirt from his stall always meant at least an hour of Burnley reminiscences and he always had time for the supporters. No airs or graces despite his huge talents.
He really loved Burnley FC and we all loved him back.
