The turf moor "dead zone"

Was just wondering if anyone else suffers with internet access during games at the turf?

On EE, and my fone says I have four out of five signal bars, with 4g internet coverage, yet I can't get near the internet to check scores/super six results.

Anyone suggest why?

Cheers

The nearby cells are swamped and all their available bandwidth is taken up. You'll still see indications of being connected to a cell but much like what happens when everyone is using your WI-Lan at home it all slows down.

Why don't BFC sell wifi passes?

You have 20000 smartphones all trying to pass data across a limited link. It can handle 2-300 concurrent connections, but not 20000

I can usually get on (EE) to check scores during the game, but rarely can I at half time. At the last game though, I couldn't get on at all.

I'd happily pay for a connection if the club offered this. Surely it could be a decent money making scheme. If they can manage this for festivals etc. I'm not sure why more clubs aren't jumping on board.

There's an argument that everyone is there for the football and not to be on line but I do like to check scores / bets during a game.

Think of all those 20,000 mobile phone transmissions frying your brains during the game as they struggle to make a connection.

I think krbfc takes them all for the team.

How did you manage that when it wasn't on TV?

I am on the Three network. It's pretty useless signal wise in lots of places but strangely never a problem accessing apps before/during + after matches at the Turf.

When you go to grounds in more populated areas there is less of an issue, cell signals are distributed over more "cells" (masts) thus less subscribed/have more capacity and everyone's phone and data works relatively within usable limits.

Towns like Burnley will have less masts and thus come match day will be massively oversubscribed and have bottlenecks.

At festivals they bring in temporary masts to spread out bandwidth over a larger area. And generally these are brought in under sponsorship by said telecom company for publicity otherwise would costs a serious amount of money to put up temporarily, something which the club wouldn't be interested in doing for 3 hours or a Saturday.

I'd say WiFi for the 20,000 people is extremely is low down on the club's agenda.

I work for Cisco.

We've a stadium solution deployed by Man City and various other clubs. Look up Real Madrid and Cisco on YouTube.

nice article, but it begs the question about why people would go to the match and be focused on 4-5 inches of mobile phone screen. I guess I'm getting old...

Firstly 20,000 is an exaggeration. Not every man, woman and child wants to use a mobile phone at the match. But there might be a couple of thousand who enjoy (from time to time) checking other match scores and the league table positions. What's wrong with that?

I'm sure I will be trying to check other scores throughout the West Ham game. I don't do it constantly, usually half time or when the game is temporarily stopped through injury or substitution.

I usually struggle on ee at half time and immediately after the game but last game it was all through it. I guess more people were checking the scores.

It's not just about the user pulling information for them to consume, but also the push that the club can do to the fan. Offers, information, and of course the data that can be collected about the users. Those analytics are used by the clubs to learn more about their fan base and customers.

Yeah, I get that about the data collection and how useful the info is to the club - big data is power these days and can leverage people in ways no one thought possible 10 years ago, and most of us dont realise we're being manipulated...
