Brook vs Spence Jnr

Post by Right_winger » Sat May 20, 2017 11:11 am

1 week away from possibly the most anticipated fight of the year so far ( for boxing purists anyway )

Any thoughts on who will win and how it will pan out?

yeah looking forward to it.
Only seen Spence fight a couple of times, but he's looked good and has a big rep with the boxing pundits.
I love watching Kell but i just hope his beating from GGG hasn't taken to much out of him - seems to be a lot of concern over shedding such a big amount of weight too.

However, we've got Mayweather's prodigy Gervonta Davis v Liam Walsh tonight - this could be a decent tear-up.

I'll go for a Spence win, but expect it to be close. It's a shame both fighters aren't undefeated though.

I haven't seen much of Spence but I know he's good and has a lot of power, slightly concerned about Brook coming back down to 147 given he's looked like he has to drain himself to get there in the past. I think 154, or even 160 as he was vs Golovkin would be better suited to him but it'll be a great fight none the less, can't pick a winner.

Iv watched Spence's last few fights and he does look the goods. However I don't think his power is all it's cracked up to be. He struggled to move Van Heerden despite hitting him with the kitchen sink. He also is a bit open when attacking and with the high guard the uppercut could cause him issues. There's no doubt that Spence's inside game is far superior to Brooks and once he traps you on the ropes it's only a matter of time.

My concerns for Brook are the weight drain. If he has done it right and comes in strong then I'd have Brook as the favourite as he will outbox Spence from the outside and pick him off as Spence tends to lunge in. Brook needs to be sharp and fit though to be able to keep Spence off him.

I'd expect the first 2 or 3 rounds to be cadgey before Spence tries to turn up the heat. We will see about round 3 or 4 what Brook thinks of Spence's Power.

unless Spence gets the KO or severely outboxes Brook then I wouldn't expect him to get the nod, Brook being the Matchroom fighter at home and all that.

I watched some Spence highlights after reading this thread and the few KO/TKOs that I saw seemed to come from accumulation of punches rather than one shot bangers. I also thought he seemed get a bit too square on at times when throwing his shots, I know it's not much to go on but I've just changed my mind to favoring Brook (assuming he's made the weight properly).

Spence does look like he can box and has looked impressive so far but his opponents have been fairly weak.
Same could be said about Brook before he left Frank Warren though.
Spence is very highly hyped up mainly from sparring sessions against elite fighters.

I'm hoping both bring their A game and it's a good fight for the fans.

Keep an eye out on the undercard too for Louis Norman fighting - Good mate of mine and a boxer I sponsor.

Classy fighter who is looking to go for a classy win and get back into the mix up after a rough last year.

Around 1030. Think spence will win. Home crowd could help brook but I think he will lose here.

Did they just turn the sound off in the end sky? Sounded like they just cut it to the embarrassment of the crowd.

Yes, they cut the sound and cut to an external shot of the arena.

Deplorable behaviour.

Yeah seemed very poor from the Sheffield crowd. It was clear early on they weren't gonna be quiet, I thought Michael Buffer should have read the situation and changed it to a moments applause which most in the ground were doing.

Bad idea to have a silence at boxing on a saturday night half way through the event when everyones bladdered.

This is the problem with trying to do these things at sport when theyre unrelated to sport.

Not that I condone it. It cut off on my stream so didnt see what happened other than the struggle to quieten the crowd.

Brook was on top then that. To be fair i wouldnt have fought with a previous eye injury like thatbif i was him. I thought it was the other eye against golovkin.

I love Bellew as a salesman; in the context of pre-fight hype he's basically boxing's answer to a WWE heel, but as a pundit he's out of order with those comments. Brook and more importantly his family will be able to reconcile a defeat. Good luck reconciling blindness.

I think the comments were more about showcasing his own aggressive persona rather than what he believed.

No need really. Im no massive fan of Brook but he was brave tonight. As he was against ggg. It takes more guts and brains to bow out than carry on regardless

That was my initial reaction, too, cricketfield. He's essentially promoting his next fight. I like the bloke from a promotional POV, but throwing a boxer other than his next opponent under a bus lacked class, IMO, especially when said boxer hadn't even left the ring.

i can't help but feel disappointed he quit. obvs i dont know what he was seeing through that eye but he's a champion in his home town, i think he should have battled through, we've seen other injured fighters go down swinging. every opponent now will target that eye 100% - if it's messed up post-GGG he may have to wrap it up.

He should retire. Its not worth risking his eyesight to continue. No way. In fact it could even damage more than his eye sight.

Hes had a good career. Made lots of money. Could make a decent pundit career. Quit while he has his health.

Were you at the fight? I was and you couldn't hear a single word Micheal Buffer said regarding the minutes silence. It turned into a rendition of Manchester and England chants by some of the crowd.

I wouldn't refer to them as utter morons as the same people were singing songs throughout the night in memory to them including a very emotional national anthem.
