Off to York this weekend so looking for good restaurant recommendations please.
Not bothered about type of cuisine or cost and would prefer central.
Thanks in advance.

Rustique - french bistro type place on Castlegate, so very central.
The escargot(snails) and cuisses de grenouille(frogs legs) were great.

Sadly York has gone massively down hill! Full of litter, homeless people and **** heads at the weekends.

Don't worry. You will be seeing a lot more of them after you're mob vote for Corbyn on the 8th of June!

Labour have literally got an entire section on it in their manifesto:
Homelessness is not inevitable in a country as decent and well off as ours. However, since 2010 the number of people sleeping rough in shop doorways and on park benches has more than doubled. This shames us all. There can be no excuses – it must end. Full stop.
More families are living in temporary accommodation, meaning 120,000 children spent last Christmas without a home to call their own.
This growing homelessness shames the Conservatives. The spiralling rise in street homelessness results directly from decisions made by the Conservatives on pay, housing, mental health and social security.
Labour will set out a new national plan to end rough sleeping within the next Parliament, starting by making available 4,000 additional homes reserved for people with a history of rough sleeping. We will also take action to tackle the root causes of homelessness, including safeguarding homeless hostels and other supported housing from crude Conservative cuts to housing benefit.

This is/was a thread, were the OP was asking for recommendations for a weekend in York.
BigChaCha & UpTheBeeHole - Why not use one of the many threads in the forum where Politics is the topic?
MODS - is it possible to stop the hijacking of threads? Can posts 4-7 be moved elsewhere? It's getting tiresome!

I can recommend The Botanist - which is on Stonegate - you'll need to book. I also like Turtle Bay (though some of the dishes are v hot and you'll need at least a full pint on standby) - again you'll need to book round the corner from The Botanist on Little Stonegate. As mentioned Rustique is very good - there's 2 of them in York - great food and very reasonable. Also had a good meal at The Judges Lodgings.

The same people own a steakhouse in our village (Sutton on the Forest) called The Pampas Grass - been 3 times - the best 3 steaks I've ever had
Heard it was closing down unfortunately

I can offer quite a few suggestions for York btw, I'm very familiar with the city, but I'm just not having classless idiots decrying a great city because literally the poorest people in our society happen to also be there.

Last time I was there we went into Pavement Vaults, got quite ****** and had some really good food.
Owned by the same people who own Euston/Sheffield/York Tap, so the beer choice is excellent.

Carluccios on St Helens Sq opposite Betty's in what was the old Terry's shop/ offices opened 6 weeks ago and good price wise - great building. Eat at first floor and if you can get a table overlooking the square by the windows.
Skosh - on Micklegate - probably the best restaurant in York.
For both the above you will need to book and you may be lucky to get in now.
Plenty of new and traditional bars on Fossgate, close to Shambles.
If you want something off the beaten track in the city centre thats out of the way, try Ate o'clock on High Ousegate. Warning blink and you will miss the entrance, its up an alley thats not very obvious.
have a drink in the City Screen bar, you don't have to go to the pictures, but sit outside overlooking the river again a less obvious place to drink away from the crowds.
Have a great time the weather is very sunny and hot at the moment

Oxo's Restaurant is good too if you want to go a couple of notches up pricewise. Great wine list.
My mate used to run El Piano too, great (veggie) burritos etc there.
For lunch I'm usually happy with a pork and stuffing butty from the place on Goodramgate.

My best mates all went to uni in York, and I ended up working there for a couple of years too.
Reading this thread makes me think how much I want to be over there boozing. Especially in this weather.

Went to Ambiente on Fossgate, excellent food. No hesitation in going back given the opportunity.
Trembling madness didn't disappoint either, the booze in the toilet was a quirky idea I liked.

Trembling madness is a belter. I spoke to one of the lads that works there and he said they may be moving to an out of town place and making it more like a beer supermarket and not having a pub. I think itd be a rotten idea myself.

Cant disagree with the food choices plus the trembling madness is a great first floor atmospheric pub with a real horrific story behind its name. Well worth a visit.

My hotel wasn't too far from Bootham Crescent so also had a quick wander down there and paused for a few minutes to recall the night we won the 4th Div.
What a night that was!

Fantastic city. Wish I lived there.
Went to see the Uni, totally underwhelmed. Unfortunately. Less than 2 hours from Hertfordshire by train. Would have been useful.
Love the Shambles.

Sam Smiths pubs are always nice and cheap!
Tim Bobbin and the Red Lion in Colne are the East Lancs SS pubs. Loads in Yorkshire.
