From same source who told us about Brady.

This source is absolutely bang on with everything Irish.
I can understand the interest but not entirely convinced he is much better than what we have. Unless we are selling Gray.

I think he'd be a very good option, whether we sell Gray or not.

unless Gray signs a new contract I would think he's done. Certainly not good enough to allow to run out a contract.

I think he fit's us better than Gray just because of his aerial ability

I would take Long and I think he would suit our system.
Are there anymore Irish players we can sign?

Has someone convinced you that he's better than Ashley Barnes in the last 5 minutes then?

S.Long, K.Long, and C.Long?

I think he'd be a perfect fit. He's exactly the sort of player we need to enable us to make the next step up.

May be we're trying to a acquire a team full of 'Longs" - first Kevin, then Chris and now Shane.
I remember doing similar on Sensible World of Soccer back in the 1990s.

A good PL striker with a solid if not spectacular goal record. I think he'd fit us quite well.
Any Southampton fans offered to drive him up here yet?

Mixed emotions from me on this.
At the beginning of this season he's exactly the sort of striker I would have been happy with, and I think he's a good player.
He is 30 though, and while I do believe he's a better all round player than Gray, I still don't believe he will score more goals. At this point he'd be a lovely 3rd option to have, but I'd be underwhelmed if we signed him for a starting berth.

I like him, personally. And I think he's more of a Kevin Phillips / Jermain Defoe type who will still be athletic, playing and scoring well into his mid 30s

I'd be very happy if we signed Shane Long. Think he's a good player.

like i said I would take him. But it doesn't exactly get the heart rate pulsating.
Has he ever hit double figures in the premier league?

2015/16 10 goals in 28 appearances for Southampton

Never been a fan of his tbh. Certainly has pace though which we need.

Fair enough. Can't complain with that return.
Maybe a partnership of Vokes/ Gray and long could be dangerous.

That return is his best in the PL, usually about 8 a season from more appearances.

his two most valuable assets are his pace and more importantly his nous. He wins free kicks galore just by annoying defenders, perfect player for us in our quest to become the Republic of Burnley. Roy Keane will need a season ticket

Think this would be a terrible signing, he's no better than Gray or Vokes and he's 30. I would like us to sign players that are actually good rather than just a grafter as we already have enough of those.

Bit confused by this slurpy... we have Vokes whose aerial ability is beyond question!
On the subject of Shane Long.... yes please. If we are to improve, and S Long WOULD improve us, we will do it slowly, and without betting the ranch. It's worked so far.

Gray doesn't win headers, Barnes doesn't have pace. Long has both these attributes making him an ideal partner for Vokes.

Was he one of the Irish players we were interested in during Steve Cotterills early days? I seem to recall there were a couple we wanted to sign ( was the other Seamus Coleman ? ) but we couldn't raise the 80k or whatever was needed ?

Was it not Kev Doyle and Long who both went to Reading?

I'm a big fan of him.
He's the type of striker I'd see as 'ideal' for Burnley in the position we are in.
Why not add to the Irish contingent.

Shane Long normally plays on his own up top but I remember him forming a great partnership with Jelavic that kept Hull up in the 13/14 season, before Southampton came in with an, at the time, bizarre offer.

I think he would be a good "addition" to the squad . Not the TOP quality signing we would all like but a very good squad member .

Ronaldo and Messi are just a little beyond us at this stage.
Shane Long would improve us, no doubt. And he's a good footballer, which means he could carry the ball from the number ten area into the box. I believe this is the right way to go. We aren't yet ready for TOP quality signings. We can't afford them, and they won't come. Hopefully Long will. Keeps us moving in the right direction.

His highest scoring season in the Prem is 10 in a team that finished 6th that season. Something Vokes has already accomplished in a much worse team. He really doesn't offer a big enough upgrade.

Maybe, but if you are expecting us to get a much bigger upgrade I think you will find we will be 25 million short of the 40 million or so required to do so !

His goal record is very much unspectacular at this level and shows (on that front) he wouldn't improve us...
However, I think he does offer more than goals, and I think he would suit our system. Not getting any younger but he could do a decent job for us for a couple of years I think.

Buy him now.
It would stop him scoring against us for starters.

a lot of those appearances are as substitute though. In Premier minutes played he has an excellent record. A goal every 283 minutes and an assist every 543. So you're saying a career Prem 12 goal and 6 assist a season striker we should not be looking at?

understand your view Charlie. But as we all know there is a reason a player is used for the majority of his career as a sub. He either can't last a full 90 minutes or his impact is only significant in short bursts.
Tbf I think he could be useful coming on at 70 minutes against tired legs.

Holly Molly what a time to be an Irish Claret i say .
Yep Longy has pace and mean real pace and has some jump on him as well , again a very good buy if we land him .

3 goals this season, 10 goals last season and 8 the one before in the league.
People have complained about the number of goals Gray got yet people think we should sign a bloke who's only ever scored double figures in the PL once...
He's just not that prolific and its generally accepted that we need more goals from our strikers.

we could have Aguero up front and it wouldn't make a difference, we need the creativity from the midfield and wingers to create more chances

Two or three years ago I might have said yes to Long but not now.
Not sure his pace is that good and no better than Gray and at 30 years old
he's probably seen his best years. No resale value either.
Think there's other younger players just as pacey who might cost a bit more
but will have just as much to offer over a longer period and we'll recoup on them.
