Happy Eid.
I know I can be critical of Islam and attitudes within the Muslim community but I still wish all celebrating today the best. Get some food down you and enjoy it lads and lasses!

Thank you Sidney and CM.
CM - you have every right to criticise Islam or anything else for that matter. It looks the sort of morning for a bacon butty and perhaps a few beers in the afternoon?

I don't have any Muslim neighbours, or work colleagues anymore so no feast for me over the coming days.
No need to go shopping or cook usually following Eid.

I may well be wrong but I thought Eid started at around 7pm tonight and continued for 24 hours?

This is because muslims can never agree on anything. The first day of Eid depends upon the sighting of the new moon. Some take the idea of sighting literally so if it's cloudy and you can't see it - it's not Eid.

The comments on his post were funny.
Someone in Australia said they could see the moon, whilst someone else in a different country couldn't.
They can never agree when its Eid and its usually amusing to see them discussing it.
They should've done what the Christians did and just used pre-existing holidays for their holy days.

In fact Eid will start after 30 days fast if the crescent moon cannot be seen for any reason. Most Moslems would wait for an Imam in Saudi Arabia to declare the end of the fast when Shawwal is announced there, hence there is usually agreement.
The crescent moon marks the first day of the following lunar month, Shawwal, and it is forbidden to fast on that day (Eid al Fitr). A moslem is also obliged to undertake specific prayers and make charitable gifts.
Its amazing to me that most non-moslems have no idea about any of this! But then quite a lot of people don't associate Christmas with Jesus either.

So maybe explain why Easter Sunday can be on any between 22 March and 25 April inclusive? In AD 325 it was fixed as being the Sunday after the first full moon after the spring solstice - probably to give it a date independent of the Jewish Passover.
I don't think moslems can take any lessons in simplicity from christians.

What am I explaining?
Why the date is now decided in advance?
Or why it used to be decided in a similar method to how Muslims decide when Eid is?
I was actually referring to Xmas in the main.

I know I don't particularly associate it with Jesus. That's because I am a Secular Humanist and an Atheist. I see it as what it is; a Pagan ritual for celebrating the darkest time of year with light, music, gift giving, and other general festivities. There's some Christian malarkey mixed in with all of that, but I take that with the same pinch of salt that I take the Pagan stuff.
It's just the same as Eid. It's a man made, cultural celebration that can be fun to join in with, but only if it is entered into without coercion and of your own free will.
Happy Eid to one and all, providing that that is your particular brand of Vodka.

Hate to be pedantic but the Koran, unlike the Bible, was written contemporaneously.
They don't starve themselves; for a month they eat and drink between sunset and sunrise and pray a lot as a test of faith and soul cleansing.
Not my cup of tea, but I wouldn't call it lunacy.

Jesus V Mohammed is on the undercard of the McGregor-Mayweather fight.
Should be a cracker, I fancy Jesus will be too clever for the classy Muslim though and with a little help from his Dad will knock him out in the 9th.

I think you will find that the meek pacifist Jebus will turn the other cheek whilst Muhammad tortures Jebus by having a fire kindled on Jebusses chest, cuts one of Jebusses arms and legs off on opposing sides, strikes off the very finger tips of Jebus and finally strikes the head from what is left of Jebusses body. But the cheating Jebus knows that he will have the last laugh as just like Easter, all his suffering for mankind will only last for the weekend and then he will be put back together as normal as if nothing happened.

The resurrection story is just a mad-weekend-with-the-lads tale that get lost in translation over the centuries.

I think its unbelievable how many people struggle to tolerate others. As long as theyre practicing peacefully, without harming or forcing it on anyone else whats the issue?
Anyway. No doubt another topic to drift off on a tangent.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you found it informative.
I'm not sure what the moderator would find so offensive though that it had to be censored, I really don't believe that people should be able to pick and choose what history should be shared with others.
If you want whitewashed versions of selected parts of history you read The Guardian, one has to go elsewhere for the truth, particularly if it is an uncomfortable truth.
