I bloody hope we don't waste 3m on him
crap goal scoring record, most goals he's ever scored in one season was only 13 in the championship 10 years ago, that is the only time he's hit double figures in any season, in the prem he averages 6 a season

Not sure about him replacing Boyd. He's a striker, but has played central midfield / in the hole. I don't imagine we'd play him outwide.

Not in the conventional sense.
He is a grafter. Capable of playing up top or out wide. Probably a blend of Boyd and Barnes if anything.

An overall record of 1 in 5 and slowing down,
34 in September ,
He's an older, slower Ashley Barnes IMO
It's a no from me.
Edit - I'd take Crouch though.

Got away with playing at the top level for a long time then. Need this type of player with a lot of experience at this level along with other signings.

He's significantly better than Ashley Barnes. I'd hope we'd also be looking at a Gray replacement and a genuine number 10 as well though.

The thing is, if we did sign him, I'd be hoping he'd be nothing more than a utility bench player, who can cover a few positions. But the report says he's unhappy at not playing, which isn't good, unless Dyche has told him he won't be guaranteed to start. I'd want better for a first team player.

A Dyche type player and I think the description of a cross between Boyd and Barnes is quite good. Not really and out and out striker as record would suggest. A good grafter and has looked good at this level when I have seen him. A useful option but not the total answer.

No point in letting go of Boyd if we are going to go sign Walters.

Good Premier League know how. Played this level for a long time. The likes of Stoke and West Brom seem to have an abundance of players with this know how so I don't think us signing someone like this for a fee a small as £3m is a terrible move...
PS - Saw him play as a lone striker for Eire in the recent international (where Kevin Long played) and he led the line with good aggression and energy.

I think he would be a good addition to the squad as long as Gray stays or we get someone like Shane Long if he goes.
Right, where's the Midfield coming from?

Would be a super signing for us.
Don't look exclusively at his goal return, cricketfieldclaret is right - he plays out wide more than he does up top these days (for Stoke anyway), and is literally the embodiement of the way our team plays. He runs through brick walls for his team, grafting non stop. Physical, good in the air, plenty of know how at this level.
Three million sounds a lot for a 33 year old, but I think he would do such a good job for us at least one season, probably two as he has never been about pace.
To be clear, I see this as 100% a replacement for Boyd - not (potentially) a replacement for Gray. I am sure he would be a wide player for us who could cover up front/be thrown more central in a pinch if chasing a goal late on. He also would suit us in the option of going 4-3-3/4-5-1 as a wide forward on the right hand side, if we ever felt like doing that - something Gray (for me) could not do.

Not sure why the age is such a big concern to people - we need players for the here and now. We aren't building for the future, we are fighting to survive at this level as long as we can.

Good short-term signing. We need a mix of younger hungry players ( Taylor) who are long term signings and experienced short term lads like Walters to keep us in this division year by year. Offer him a big bonus if we stay up...makes sense.

Walters out wide, Vokes and Barnes upfront, what a pile of sh##e that would be to watch, some on here would still claim we aren't a hoofball team.

Am I the only one who is underwhelmed by this if true? £3m for a 34 year old and we've already got 2 target men. I don't see Walters as much of an upgrade on Vokes or Barnes. We need to keep Grey or get a direct replacement with pace and a decent first touch. Everton would be getting Grey on the cheap and we'll find it hard to replace him and Walters not the option for me.

We don't really exploit vokes' aerial prowess at the moment, so I can't see us changing in that way.
Undecided about Walters. It's a bit "meh" I think. Had this been rumoured 3 years ago, then I would've taken him no question. The age thing IS important, to disregard it is folly imo. At some point the legs go. 3m is a lot if his legs go during an arduous pre-season.

So far (and I'm not against him as a signing) it's looking very much as though it will be more of the same, style wise. It's definitely evolution not revolution but I do hope we look for some genuine pace and skill. I want to see someone who will bring a bit of excitement to go with the effort and work rate.

Reading the thread above Rishton, I would suggest that you are not the only one underwhelmed by this signing.
He played very well in that recent Irish game. And he will be champing at the bit to make the squad for Russia.
He also played very well for Stoke in their 2-0 home win against us. Scored a lovely goal.
I think he's been a popular player wherever he's played and could be a canny signing.

we would just need Martin O'neil and then we can re-brand completely
