Off to Berlin in October and hoping to take in the Hertha vs Schalke game. Anybody been before? If so, is it worth getting tickets online before we go or just get them at the ground. I know they don't sell out every game, not sure if Schalke is a big game or not?

I had trouble booking online so went to the tourist place at the Brandenburg Gate, they have a very well organised system they book the ticket on their terminal for you after offering you the area where you would like to sit and different prices then print it out in full.

Typical German efficiency and link up with the club, went there this Easter and watched the Hertha v Wolfsburg game, a very enjoyable experience.

Thanks for that. Any other tips of places to visit whilst there?

Also, were the ticket prices fair?

Fantastic stadium. It has that special feeling even when you go round when it is empty. We got tickets through our German colleagues but I believe you can go to the stadium or the Herta shop which I think was in the Europa Centre.

Have you got a hotel yet? If not the Ibis at Charlottesburg was very good.

The Reichstag is worth a visit. There's a good city walking tour. Think it starts at Brandenburg gate.

You need to book in advance for the Reichstag.

Berlin is far and away the best city break I have ever had. You won't be disappointed.

We were advised by a friend to stay in the East as the public transport is brilliant for getting around, and we were not disappointed, for tours of the City and beyond we were recommended http://www.insidertour.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they were absolutely brilliant as well. Brian Bell was the guide on 3 of the 4 tours we went on and again he really does know his stuff despite being American he has lived out there for something like 12 years I think he said.

We tried Airbnb for the first time and it worked a treat, very Central in the Mitte area and handy for the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate etc.

Any more details wanted just fire away.

Don't worry about ticket prices, I've heard they are pretty reasonable. Thanks for all your info, been helpful!

Your not wrong there.

Go see the Eastside Gallery...it's a long section of the Berlin Wall (about 1300m) running along the river painted with large and striking murals, many of a political nature. Kreuzberg is a great area for bars etc at night. It's a great place for a weekend break.

Off to see Hertha play in March with brother and brother in law. Any recommendations for...

> area to stay near good german pubs in Berlin. Having googled, Mitte and Kreuzberg look good shouts but is Kreuzberg safe?? Nightlife will be more traditional pubs than trendy bars

There’s nothing much near to the ground. There’s lots of beer vans around where you can get a pint and drink on the street which is quite good actually. There is a couple of tradition German beer gardens but they are rammed before the game but we managed to get in one after the game whilst letting trains die down.

Get your match tickets from any of the Hertha Berlin stores around the city.

In terms of areas I don’t have many recommendations. All I’d say is that I wouldn’t go east side gallery. That’s where we stayed and it was pretty grim at night. Lots of drug dealers etc. Mitte looks a lot livelier.

Try the East German museum, The DDR Museum is a museum in the centre of Berlin. Get behind the wheel of the iconic Trabi for a simulated drive through East Berlin, take a seat in a 1970s East German living room, and hear about how the state spied on millions of ordinary East Germans.

I'm in Berlin Airport now we went to the hertha v dortmund game absolutely brilliant experience, the best atmosphere we all said, if your getting tickets get in the ostkurve brilliant noise and visually I'd say the best, non stop singing jumping,drinking being in the ostkurve almost as good as watching the match I suppose it helps it being a great attendance 66000 on

I'm off to see guns n roses at the Olympia stadion 3rd of june never been to berlin before so looking forward to it

Excellent stadium Burnleysteve and with German efficiency hardly any queues easy to get there on the train bars and merchandise ringing the whole stadium and when we left the ground expecting trains to be rammed we got to the station to see loads of trains waiting back in berlin centre in 20 mins. If your there for a few days I'd look at getting a train and tram travel ticket maybe even a weekly pass as things to see are spread out and they're every few mins we never waited more than 5 mins for a tram
